Old Rochester boys basketball player 'no longer' on team after spitting on opponent

After an investigation into an alleged incident of a player spitting on another player during Monday, March 11's MIAA Division 2 state semifinal, the Old Rochester Regional School District released a statement.

The statement 'confirmed the incident' and announced the ORR player was no longer a member of the boys basketball team.

The incident took place with 5:24 left in the third quarter after a basket by Pittsfield junior Malachi Perry had cut Old Rochester’s lead to 43-32.

Perry was called for a technical foul for his response to the incident. No foul was called on the Old Rochester player.

Proposed 190-foot-tall New Bedford-Fairhaven Bridge may not be tall enough

The New Bedford-Fairhaven Bridge's proposed replacement features matching, 190-foot towers, yet city officials are concerned it poses a "height restriction" problem.

They say such a height restriction to passing vessels could inhibit future offshore wind industry development.

MassDOT officials are working on finalizing the new bridge's design in 25% installments with the goal of starting construction in 2027. They have also encouraged local input.

City officials expressed concerns with the height restriction to be created by the new design in a recent letter to MassDOT.

ORR senior John Butler and junior teammate Zack Mourao had a combined 53 points to power the No. 2 Bulldogs to a thrilling 82-72 victory over third-seeded Pittsfield on Monday, March 11 in the Div. 3 state semifinals at Worcester State University.

With their 13th straight win, the Bulldogs (21-4) advanced to their first state final appearance in nine years.

Mass State Police say Sunday's fatal crash victim was a 46-year-old New Bedford man

A 46-year-old New Bedford man has been identified as the victim of a deadly single-car crash in the city Sunday afternoon.

According to Mass. State Police, the driver, Jeffrey Szynal, 46, of New Bedford, "experienced a medical event and lost consciousness" while taking Exit 27, the off-ramp from Route I-195 East onto Washburn Street, crashing into a utility pole at the end of the ramp.

The top-seeded Vikings kept their season alive with a thrilling 67-65 overtime victory over No. 4 Millbury on Tuesday, March 12's in the MIAA Div. 4 Final Four to get a chance to defend their state title from a year ago.

With 12 seconds left in overtime and the game tied at 65, senior guard Ajay Lopes drove to the basket, and with a pair of Millbury defenders converging, Lopes found senior center Antoine Crosson for the game-winning layup as the buzzer sounded.
