Bedford soccer reaches district finals with lopsided win over Lincoln

TEMPERANCE – Bedford’s girls soccer team is more offensive this season.

“We definitely learned how to score this year,” Bedford coach Kellie Grosteffon said. “We’ve had a really great year. We’ve scored like 55 goals this year. This team has always struggled with that.”

It was no struggle for the Mules Thursday as they routed Ypsilanti Lincoln 9-0 in the quarterfinals of a Division 1 District they are hosting.

Freshman Avry Madalinski has been in the center of the scoring surge. She rang up three goals and a pair of assists Thursday.

“She’s a freshman center midfielder,” Grosteffon said. “She’s done really well.”

Libby Ewing also had a hat trick for 7-9-3 Bedford, Lexi Ripple ntted a pair of goals and Maddie Helpman contributed a goal and two assists.

Madden Mosley chipped in a pair of assists and Gabby Chapple and Kam Clifton had one each.

Bedford will take on No. 4 Saline in the semifinals at 5 p.m. Tuesday. The second game of a doubleheader that night features Ann Arbor Pioneer and Ann Arbor Skyline, which beat Monroe 8-0 Thursday.

Huron defense shines

TRENTON – New Boston Huron (17-0) picked up its 14th shutout of the season Thursday, nipping Riverview 2-0 in the semifinals of the Division 2 district at Trenton.

Ava Banko recorded a goal and an assist. Shay Carpenter had the other goal and Avery Turk added an assist.

Maggie Mentzer, Maggie Warden and Addison Dolencic led the defense.

Huron's opponent in the finals at 7 p.m. Tuesday will be Trenton, which handled Gibraltar Carlson 8-0 Thursday.

PREP BASEBALL

Ida bats come to life

IDA – Dean Thomas, Cam Riggs, Jaxon Millican and Gavin Albring banged out two hits each for Ida in a 13-2 rout of Manchester Thursday.

Thomas, Riggs, Jak Kocinski and Alex Noland combined on a two-hitter for 20-9 Ida.

Manchester scored four times in the seventh inning to steal a 4-2 win in the opener. AJ Schrader had two hits for Ida.

Huron cranks up offense

NEWPORT – New Boston Huron scored seven times in the first inning and never stopped hitting in a 18-1 rout of Jefferson Thursday.

Jackson Surma led the way, going 3-for-3 with three runs. Austin O’Dell also had three hits while Nate Morse and Cash Moczdlowsky added two each.

Caiden Siggett and Tyler Phillips pitched well for Huron, which improved to 26-4 and finished 13-1 in the Huron League to tie Airport for the title.

Luke Beaudrie collected two hits for Jefferson.

Jets earn another win

CARLETON – Airport ran its record to 24-6 by clubbing Dearborn Heights Annapolis 17-2 Thursday.

Colin Nowak and Nolan Zajac each went 2-for-2. Zajac scored three runs and drove in three while Nowak crossed the plate four times.

Drake Ferris earned the win.

SMCC ties champs

SOUTHGATE – St. Mary Catholic Central played to a 7-7 tie with Downriver League champion Southgate Anderson Thursday.

Drew Bylow led the Falcons with three hits and two RBI and Jaden Paquette added two hits.

Kalb leads Summerfield

PETERSBURG – Reece Kalb allowed just three hits and did not walk a batter for Summerfield in a 5-1 win over Washtenaw Christian Thursday.

Keegan Sieler led the offense for the 11-15 Bulldogs with two hits and Jude Flowers ripped a double.

Monroe wastes lead

ANN ARBOR – Monroe let a four-run lead slip away in a 15-9 loss to Ann Arbor Skyline Wednesday.

Jax Jones and Bryce Lechner had two hits each for the Trojans and Jones drove in three runs.

“We lost another game we should have won,” Monroe coach Chris Clark said. “It’s been a frustrating year as we haven’t played as well as we are capable of playing.”

PREP SOFTBALL

Monroe’s Collett foils Ida

MONROE – Avery Collett tossed a four-hitter and sparked a rally that carried Monroe to a 4-1 win over Ida Thursday.

Ida carried a 1-0 lead into the fifth inning when Collett tied the game with an RBI single, then scored the go-ahead run on a single by Maci Willey.

Consecutive doubles by Ali Lewis, Eloisa Reyes and Ava Chapman brought home two more Monroe runs in the sixth inning.

Collett racked up 10 strikeouts as Monroe improved to 18-14.

“Ida played great today, but Avery was awesome in the circle and we picked up some clutch hits late in the game that we really needed,” Monroe coach Jim Davis said.

Dundee, Bedford split

TEMPERANCE – Dundee and Bedford played to a split decision Thursday as Dundee took the first game 8-3 and Bedford came back to rule the second 11-6.

Kiernan Brown, Shay VanZandt and Kennedy Irwin finished with four hits each for Dundee. Brown collected two home runs and two doubles, VanZandt also homered and Irwin pushed her batting average to .614.

Lauren Doane earned her 13th victory of the season for the 23-10 Vikings.

Payton Pudlowski rang up four hits and Aubrey Hensley added three, including a home run and a double for Bedford.

“Pudlowski and Hensley were dominant at the plate today,” Bedford coach Marla Gooding said. “(Kaitlyn) Kwiatkowski’s speed was a huge impact on our game as well. Makayla Johnson had very clutch at-bats and moved runners well for us today.

“Those were super-fun games and extremely competitive against Dundee. They’re a solid team and Mickey (Dundee coach Mickey Moody) does a phenomenal job coaching them.”

TRACK AND FIELD

Big Day for Bedford

DUNDEE – Maddi Duke set a meet record of :52.54 in the 400 meters to lead a strong day by Bedford in the Jim Beck Freshman Invitational Thursday.

Alex Mapes swept the hurdles races for the boys, Rachel Burley ruled the 100 and 200 and Iva Ravindra finished first in the 400 and 800 for the girls.

The Mules also got wins from Brody McCloud (boys 800), Madyson Wallace (girls long jump), the girls 400 relay of Wallace, Burley, Tara Thompson and Olivia Eby and the mixed 1,600 relay of Sophia Johnson, Jack Fulop, Ravindra and McCloud.

Torrian Simmons of Monroe swept the shot-put and discus.

Other boys champs for Region schools were Hunter Kress of Jefferson (1,600), David Mills of Erie Mason (high hurdles), Ben Gault of Summerfield (high jump) and Austin Taylor of Summerfield (pole vault).

Airport’s Isabella Mulvin won both hurdle races for the girls and Elena Miller of Summerfield pulled off an unlikely double in the shot-put and 3,200 meters.

Other winners were Juleigh Husby of St. Mary Catholic Central (1,600), Gabi Myshock of Summerfield (discus), Madelyn Roderick of Ida (high jump) and Sophia Stanger of Summerfield (pole vault).

JUNIOR VARSITY GOLF

Urbanski is medalist

ANN ARBOR – Bedford’s Connor Urbanski shot 73 to earn medalist honors in the Southeastern Conference junior varsity meet Thursday.

He helped the Mules take second place in the team standings. They also had quartets that wound up fifth and ninth out of 21 teams.

Quintin Bruce shot 78.
