Beattie sets state best, Williams, Murphy double winners at state track & field qualifier

Warwick senior Lily Beattie established a state best of 13 feet, 7 inches to win the girls pole vault at the Section 9 state qualifier held at the New York Armory on Saturday. Beattie is headed for the University of Mississippi.

Pine Bush senior Madison Williams continued her domination in the jumping events, winning the long jump and triple jump. She won the long at 18 feet, 4 1/2 inches and the triple at 37-8 1/2, winning the former by 15 inches and the latter by more than 20.

Wallkill sophomore Caitlyn Murphy was a double winner, winning the 3,000 meters in 9 minutes, 59.48 seconds and then adding the 1,500 in 4:42.74.

Goshen’s Dametrious Esannason (6.593) nipped Warwick’s Luke Beattie by 1/1000th of a second in the 55-meters (the top two finishers in all events advance to states, as do third-place finishers who meet a standard). Cornwall’s Ilunga Salerno won the 55 hurdles (7.68), a tenth-of-a-second slower than his No. 6 time in the state.

Pine Bush’s Nicholas Burgess improved by 6/10ths of a second, winning the 300 in 35.11. O’Neill’s Jackson Smith improved by 1.3 seconds, jumping to No. 5 in the state (1:21.61) to win the 600.

In the distance events, Tri-Valley’s Van Furman crushed his best in the 3,200, taking 16 seconds off to win the 3,200 (9:15.15, the No. 4 time in the state). Brady Danyluk of Newburgh won the 1,000 and teammate Devin Batelic took three-quarters of a second off to win the 1,600 (4:20.31, moving to No. 8 in the state).

State high jump leader Joe McDonald of Kingston won at 6 feet, 6 inches (his best is 6-10); Port Jervis’ Constentino Proscia won the long jump; state No. 2 Damani DeLoatch of Beacon won the triple jump; Joshua Dolansky of Pine Plains won the shot put; state leader Aidan Ifkovits of New Paltz won the weight throw; and, state leader Luke Beattie won the pole vault (15-0).

In the girls sprints, section leader Kessler Hirsch of Minisink won the 55 dash; Cornwall’s Caigan Leonard matched her state No. 7 time of 8.30 in the 55 hurdles; Alexandria North of Lourdes shaved a full second to win the 300 in 39.95 (No. 6 in the state); and, Cornwall’s Frances Teague won the 600.

In the distance events, section leader Shaylen Goslar of Pine Bush won the 1,000; and, Monroe-Woodbury’s Veronica Wolnicki won the 1,500 race walk by 18 seconds. Livi Lathrop of New Paltz won the high jump.

In the throws, section leader (and state No. 3) Daniella Johnson of Kingston won the shot put and Juliana Juras of Marlboro won the weight throw with a No. 5 state throw of 48 feet, 1/4 inch.

In the boys relays, Middletown won the 800 (the finish was under protest), Newburgh the 1,600 and Monroe-Woodbury the 3,200. For the girls, the winners were Middletown (800), Minisink Valley (1,600) and Cornwall (3,200).

The state championships will be held March 2 at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex on Staten Island.
