The BBC's reboot of the detective series Rebus has unveiled its first trailer.

Starring Outlander's Richard Rankin as the detective, the upcoming crime show based on Sir Ian Rankin's novels premieres in a week's time.

"Shaken after a violent encounter with gangster Ger Cafferty, Edinburgh detective John Rebus finds himself at a psychological crossroads," teases a new synopsis for the reboot.

This new incarnation of the character is said to be at odds with "corporate technocrats" at work – and there's drama in his personal life, too.

He's drifting out of his daughter's life as his ex-wife's wealthy husband wins favour with the family, and he's also involved in a "toxic affair he knows he needs to end".

The synopsis adds: "In a time of divisive politics and national discord, Rebus's ex-soldier brother Michael, who's broke, desperately crosses the line in order to provide for his family, and Rebus starts to question if the law still has meaning, or if everyone is reverting to an older set of rules. And if so, why shouldn't he do so too?"

In the teaser footage, we see Rebus pondering the meaning of the law and noting the 'rules' and conventions that criminals follow to protect their own – "blood is thicker than water, don't grass on your friends, an eye for an eye..."

"They need a reminder that police know the rules, too," he says.

Sir Ian addressed the latest adaptation of his stories recently, saying: "I'm thrilled that Rebus is coming to the BBC. A great cast and a compelling story – I really can't wait for viewers to see it."

Richard added: "I am thrilled that Rebus will premiere on the BBC.

"It's been an honour taking on the role of Ian Rankin's renowned John Rebus. A character enjoyed by so many in such a fresh and original adaptation."

Rebus has previously been portrayed by both John Hannah and Ken Stott, in an ITV series that aired between 2000 and 2007.

Rebus premieres on Friday, May 17 on BBC One, with all episodes available on BBC iPlayer that day.
