Bayside Championship Previews: Baseball, Softball and Lacrosse teams battle for conference title's

It's championship week in the Bayside Conference's spring season, as Monday and Tuesday hold the Bayside Championship games for baseball, softball and lacrosse. And with the MPSSAA playoffs for each sport kicking off shortly after, the joys and intensity of postseason competition has officially arrived.

For the undefeated Mardela Warriors softball team, they'll be looking to repeat as Bayside Conference Champions, facing the same North Dorchester team they faced in last year's conference title game. Stephen Decatur's boys and girls lacrosse teams are back in the Bayside title game once again, and will look to break through with a victory after each went through dominant regular seasons. And Decatur's baseball team will play Colonel Richardson at Perdue Stadium in a championship matchup between two perennial state title contenders.

Here are previews of this week's Bayside Championship Games:

Softball: Mardela vs. North Dorchester

A rematch of last year's Bayside Championship game, the Mardela Warriors and North Dorchester are set to meet again in the softball title game, this time at Salisbury University. Mardela won last year's game 4-2, and the Warriors return a lot of experience from last year's championship team.

Mardela has gone undefeated this season, building upon their 1A state semifinal last year, and embarking on a dominant softball campaign. They capped off their perfect regular season with a 7-3 win over Stephen Decatur in the last week of the season, with a big 7th-inning three-run home run from Camryn Dorr expanding their lead, and pitcher Ava Twilley pitching a complete game and striking out nine batters. Mardela looks poised to make another long run in the state tournament, and grabbing another Bayside title could be just the beginning for the Warriors postseason hopes.

North Dorchester has been almost equally as dominant in the Bayside North, dropping just two games on the year and thoroughly beating most of their opponents. It will probably be another tough battle if the Warriors want to win another Bayside title, but they've proven capable of pulling out the big wins time and again.

Baseball: Stephen Decatur vs. Colonel Richardson

May 7 | 6 p.m. | Perdue Stadium

Decatur's Lukas Loring (24) pitches against Parkside Thursday, April 25, 2024, in Berlin, Maryland. Decatur defeated Parkside 1-0 after 12 innings.

The Stephen Decatur Seahawks are back in the Bayside Championship game, as they are set to meet Colonel Richardson at Perdue Stadium Tuesday afternoon. After winning the title in 2022, the Seahawks narrowly missed out last year with losses to Parkside. But the Seahawks got their revenge this season, beating Parkside twice, including a 12-inning thriller late in the season that was won by Jackson Cheung, who scored on a wild pitch.

Colonel Richardson returns to Perdue Stadium for the Bayside Championship for the second year in a row, as they just narrowly lost to Parkside last season. The Colonels, one of the top contenders in Class 1A baseball, and will certainly be motivated to grab the conference title this year after falling just short last year. In a matchup of not just two of the best teams on the Eastern Shore, but two of the best in the state of Maryland, hopefully this year's game will have similar fireworks to last years.

Girls Lacrosse: Stephen Decatur vs. Queen Anne's

May 6 | 5 p.m.| Kent Island

A rematch of last year's Bayside title game, Decatur's girls lacrosse team will play Queen Anne's at Kent Island High School on Monday for the Bayside title. Last year, Queen Anne's grabbed a convincing 9-3 in the title game, but this year's game could be a lot closer.

Decatur has had another great season as they've gone through their Bayside campaign, losing just one game on the year. And arguably the Seahawks' biggest win of the season came in an April win over Queen Anne's at home, where they defeated the Lions 10-7. Another win over the two-time defending Bayside Champions would bring a trophy back to Berlin, knocking off the team that kept them from doing so last year.

Boys Lacrosse: Stephen Decatur vs Kent Island

May 6 | 6:45 p.m. | Kent Island High School

Decatur's Ashton March (23) gets the ball against Kent Island Friday, April 19, 2024, in Berlin, Maryland. Decatur defeated Kent Island 14-11.

The Boys Lacrosse team for the Decatur Seahawks have also had a stellar season, clinching another consecutive Bayside South title with dominant wins over rivals Bennett and Parkside in their last two games. Now, the Seahawks attention turns to the Bayside title game, whether they face a rematch with a familiar and dangerous opponent.

Decatur and Kent Island faced-off just a few weeks ago in Berlin, where Decatur defeated the Buccaneers 14-11, a statement win against a defending state champion. Now the Seahawks will have to travel to Stevensville in hopes of walking away with both a Bayside Conference title, and a second win over the reigning state champs.
