PETOSKEY — Road construction season is officially underway in Petoskey.

The first project of the spring will begin on April 1 on Bay View Avenue. The project calls for a water main replacement, new pavement and subgrades, new curb and gutter, and new sidewalk.

“The main driver for the project is we’re going to install a new water main, replace an old water main that runs up that street,” said Director of Public Works Mike Robbins. “We’re going to be looping it to the Lincoln Place water main.”

According to Robbins, the project will result in better water quality for residents in that area.

“With that project, the street surface needs to be replaced,” he added. “The street is in pretty bad shape on Bay View Avenue, so we’re going to be putting in new curb and gutter … with a sidewalk installation on the west side. It will be new subgrades, new pavement and that sort of thing.”

According to the city’s website, barricades and signage will be placed notifying motorists that the street is closed.

“It’s just strictly going to be dealing with the residents that live on that street,” Robbins said. “It will be localized only.”

Harbor Springs Excavating will be doing the work, with a low bid of $465,114 for the project.

Robbins said the project is set to be completed by the end of June.

Before this project wraps up, the city will jumping into more of its planned spring and summer road work. Resurfacing and concrete repairs are set for Rose Street, Winter Park Lane and Balsam Avenue, as well as resurfacing work on East Mitchell Street.
