Basketball World Reacts To Kyrie Irving’s Bold Nike Comment
Over the past few years, the partnership between Kyrie Irving and Nike has become one of the most lucrative endorsement deals in professional sports. The Brooklyn Nets guard has developed a signature shoe line in conjunction with the sports apparel company that has quickly become one of the most popular and recognizable products among NBA stars.
However, that once harmonious relationship could be hanging on thin ice as of Wednesday after Irving revealed that tension is mounting between him and Nike over the newest edition of his signature shoe.
Irving commented on an Instagram post Wednesday that contained leaked photos of the soon-to-be released Kyrie 8’s, claiming that he had “nothing to do with the design or marketing” of the shoes. The Nets star also shared that Nike plans to drop the new kicks without his consent.
“I have nothing to do with the design or marketing of the upcoming #Kyrie8, IMO these are trash! I have Absolutely nothing to do with them! Nike plans to release it without my okay regardless of what I say, so I apologize in advance to all of my sneaker heads and true supporters of the #KAI11 brand,” Irving wrote in the comment.
Irving’s claim sparked immediate concern from fans and media members around the sports world. Many found the NBA star’s willingness to challenge Nike, so openly, while still under contract shocking. Others expressed their support for Irving and backed the notion that he should get a major say in the development of his signature shoes.

Has a big time Nike-sponsored athlete ever said anything like this while still under contract with Nike? https://t.co/T5sZpqNf7x

Irving’s past designs have become extremely well-liked by players around the Association and many can be found wearing Kyrie’s while on the court. The guard’s shoes have also become an integral part of popular culture as fans have warmly received past editions.
However, Irving’s bold claim on Wednesday may cast some doubt on a future relationship between him and Nike. His remarks are not a matter to be taken lightly and are very concerning, if there’s even a shred of truth to them.
Regardless of one’s personal feelings toward Irving, he should undoubtedly have a major voice in the production of his own merchandise. Nike will need to work quickly to remedy the situation if they hope to salvage any relationship with the NBA star and prevent any potential damage to shoe sales.
