In baseball season's final midweek game, Texas Longhorns continue to showcase their power

Texas continued to swing a hot bat in a 16-8 win over Sam Houston State at UFCU Disch-Falk Field on Tuesday night.

The Longhorns began the week averaging a Big 12-best two home runs per game. They hit five against the Bearkats. Kimble Schuessler and Jalin Flores both cleared the Yeti Yard section of the ballpark over the first four frames as Texas built a 6-1 lead. Jared Thomas and Will Gasparino were later responsible for the sixth and seventh grand slams of UT's season and Peyton Powell's seventh-inning solo shot provided an exclamation point on the box score.

Over its last five games, Texas (28-18, 13-8) has crushed 20 homers.

In its final midweek game on the season, Texas recorded 11 extra-base hits. The Longhorns scored 14 of their runs with two outs in an inning.

"Hitting is contagious, you can see that. Pretty much everyone raked tonight," said Schuessler, who complemented his homer with three doubles.

Texas led by as many as 14 runs on Tuesday. Sam Houston State twice narrowed its deficit to seven runs, but the Bearkats were unable to get any closer on the scoreboard.

The beating of the Bearkats came two days after UT won both games of a doubleheader at Oklahoma. Due to a weather-delayed ending to Sunday's second game and a bus ride home, Texas did not return to Austin until after 4 a.m. on Monday. Texas already had a day off scheduled for Monday so players were able to focus on rest and final exams.

"We're trying to build a mature team here and having the ability to be a lot more consistent is a part of that," Texas coach David Pierce said. "I thought they did a great job of just getting focused. We've been so good with adversity and our backs against the wall."

Texas will return to UFCU Disch-Falk Field on Friday for the opener of a three-game series against No. 14 Oklahoma State. In the Big 12 standings, Oklahoma State (31-14, 14-7) is currently tied for second place while Texas has nestled into the fourth-place slot.
