Baseball: Quincy splits with Concord, Bronson sweeps Reading

QUINCY – The Quincy Oriole varsity baseball team battled to a hard-fought split with Big 8 rival Concord on Tuesday night, taking game one 5-4 before dropping game two 6-1.

Game one saw Concord tie the game up with three runs in the sixth inning, only to see Quincy come back with a walk-off win in the bottom of the seventh inning to take the 5-4 win.

Quincy started off the scoring with two runs in the first inning and another two in the fifth for four runs. Concord equaled that with a run in the fourth and three clutch runs in the top of the sixth to tie things up at 4-4 heading into the later innings.

After Concord only put one on via a walk in the top of the seventh, it was once again time for Quincy heriocs in the bottom of the seventh. Jimmy Maynard started off the rally with a one out single, which was followed quickly by a steal from Maynard and an infield single from Ryan Kempter, putting runners at the corners with one out. Kempter took second on a fake squeeze bunt play that saw the Concord catcher try to pick off Maynard at third, however the throw found its way into the outfield, allowing Maynard to score and giving Quincy the win.

Kempter secured the win on the mound for Quincy after throwing one and two-thirds of an inning in relief, allowing two hits and no runs with two walks and two strikeouts. Brennen Allman made the start on the mound and threw five innings and a third, allowing three hits and four runs with four walks and five strikeouts.

It was Kempter packing the big bat, finishing the game at 2 for 4 with two key singles and two runs scored.

Ethan Copas added a double and two RBIs in the Quincy win.

Game two of the doubleheader saw Concord put up four runs in the first inning and two in the second for a quick 6-0 lead. The Yellow Jacket defense stymied the Quincy offense for much of the game, only allowing one run on four total hits.

It was Kempter taking the loss on the mound for Quincy after throwing one inning in the start, allowing three hits and four unearned runs with one walk and one strikeout. Mason Graves pitched four innings in relief, allowing three hits and two runs with two walks and four strikeouts. Jimmy Maynard finished off the game on the mound, throwing one inning of no-hit baseball.

Brennan Allman and Mason Graves both had multi-hit games, with Allman adding a double in the effort. Grant Holroyd scored the only run of the game.

Quincy is now 4-2 overall on the season and will next see action Friday when they travel to Hudson.

Bronson has little trouble with Reading in Big 8 sweep

READING – The Bronson Viking baseball team had little trouble with Big 8 rival Reading Tuesday night, taking the hard-earned sweep by scores of 18-2 and 9-4.

Game one saw Bronson score early and often, out hitting Reading 15-3 on their way to the win.

Seth Withington took the win on the mound for Bronson after throwing four innings in the start, allowing three hits and two runs with one walk and nine strikeouts. Owen Kimmons finished off the game on the mound, throwing one inning while striking out three.

All but two members of the Bronson lineup recorded hits in the win, led by Carson Stevens who finished 4 for 4 with three singles and a double with five RBIs and two runs scored.

Withington also had a big game at the plate, finishing 2 for 5 with a single and a double and three RBIs while Kimmons finished 2 for 4 with two singles, two RBIs, and three runs scored.

Game two of the doubleheader saw Bronson score eight runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take their first lead of the game, a lead they would hang on to for the 9-4 victory.

Bronson outhit Reading 6-4 in the win, with Carson Stevens taking the win on the mound after throwing three innings in relief all while allowing four hits and two runs with two walks and four strikeouts.

Spencer Losinski led Bronson at the plate with a single and two RBIs while Kimmons, Warner Wotta, Stevens, and Kestin Goodman all added RBIs.

Bronson is now 5-5 on the season with the sweep and will next see action Friday when they host Fremont.
