Baseball May roundup: Results, analysis, links for GMC, Skyland and area Union County

Baseball fans, with the new month we're running a new file. This is May's scores and highlights from the Greater Middlesex Conference and area Skyland Conference and Union County Conference.

Wednesday, May 1

Old Bridge 4, Edison 3

Justin Hascup went the distance and Old Bridge took the inter-divisional GMC game. Edison (10-5) jumped to a 3-1 lead after the first inning, but the Knights (12-5) scored in the second and added two runs in the sixth.

Hascup allowed two earned runs and seven hits over the seven innings and also went 2-for-4. In the balanced offensive attack. Chris Crosta (double, RBI, run) and Brady Meyer (run) each had two hits. John Smith (RBI, run), Frank Papeo (RBI) and JT Meyer each singled, while Christian Cavanaugh walked and scored.

For the Eagles, Brody Ferrer doubled and drove in two runs and Darren Tirado was 2-for-3.

Hillsborough 13, Middlesex 0 (5 innings)

Krish Patel allowed four hits over four innings as Hillsborough took the non-conference game. The visiting Raiders (7-9) jumped to a 5-0 lead after the first inning and put up six runs in the fourth inning.

Andrew Advani (2 RBIs, 2 run) and Alexander Orr (RBI, 3 runs) each laced two hits and a double. Shailen Patel (2 RBIs, 2 runs), Jake Battagliese (2 runs) and Liam Gallagher (double, 2 RBIs, run) each added a hit in the win.

For Middlesex (5-11), Dalton Michael doubled.

Somerset Tech 11, Perth Amboy Magnet 1 (6 innings)

Joel Linares hit two home runs and Austin Schuster threw a four-hitter in the full six innings with nine strikeouts and no walks in the GMC inter-divisional game. Somerset Tech (3-6) led 3-1 put it away with three runs in the fifth and five runs in the sixth.

Linares finished 2-for-4 with five RBIs and Cole Russomanno was 3-for-4 (doubled) and scored twice. Logan Russomanno (2-for-4, double, RBI, run) also had a multi-hit day. Steven LaRosa (RBI, 2 runs) and Schuster (double, RBI, 2 runs) also had big days.

For Perth Amboy Magnet (4-10), Zachary Lenardo was 2-for-4 (double) with an RBI.

South Plainfield 11, Scotch Plains-Fanwood 4

Anthony Tomei homered and drove in four runs and Aldo Pigna threw five shutout innings in relief as South Plainfield snagged the non-conference win. The Tigers (13-3) scored 10 runs in the bottom of the second to break the game open.

Pigna allowed five hits and struck out six. Aiden McCarthy went 2-for-3 and scored twice and Dan Kapsch (2-for-4) scored. Nick Irizarry singled and drove in two runs. Also adding a hit were Zack Robinson (run), Jay Alvarez (double, RBI, run), Brandon Bickunas (RBI, run) and Steve Studlack (RBI, run, double).

For the Raiders (12-5), Jack Sponheimer (RBI), Joe LaRosa, Jaden Carpien (2 RBI, run) and Ryan Quinones had two hits apiece.

Voorhees 13, Lenape Valley 7

Dylan Jordan homered and drove in four runs on a 2-for-3 day as No. 16th-seeded Voorhees pulled the upset over 13th-seeded Lenape Valley in the Hunterdon/Warren/Sussex Tournament first round.

The Vikings (5-11) meet fourth-seeded Hunterdon Central on Saturday.

Brandon Aulert was 2-for-5 with three RBIs and Bryen Flaherty went 2-for-4 (2 RBIs, double) to lead Voorhees. Dylan Vernick (double, RBI), Joey Nolan (RBI) and Joe Wernicki (double, RBI) each had a hit in the win.

North Hunterdon 3, Montgomery 2

Alex Famolari allowed two runs in five innings and North Hunterdon scored three times in the bottom of the fourth to pull out the win. Ben Linzer threw two shutout innings for the Lions (10-5). Zach Fronio doubled and drove in a run and Nick Politi singled and scored.

For Montgomery (6-9), Alaire Chen went the distance allowing three runs (2 ER) in six innings off of two hits and three walks. Lucas Heines was 2-for-3 with an RBI for the Cougars.

Lawrence 5, Bridgewater-Raritan 2

JR Rosado and Matt Fattore each singled and drove in a run as Bridgewater-Raritan (14-2) lost to fellow state power Lawrence (16-1).

New Brunswick 8, Highland Park 7

Carlos Paredes doubled and drove in two runs as New Brunswick got the walk-off win over Highland Park in the GMC inter-divisional game.

The Zebras (5-6) scored three times in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings. Kelvin Heuston (RBI, run), Devin Heuston (RBI, run, double), Ronaldy Peralta (RBI, run, double) and Ryan Diaz (RBI, run) each had a hit in the win.

For Highland Park (6-7), Owen Roth-Zappo singled and drove in two runs.

East Brunswick Magnet 8, Timothy Christian 3

Michael Zappola went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and Jack Clements allowed an earned run in five innings in the GMC Gold Division win.

Nomar Carreras (RBI, run), Matt Murphy (RBI) and Stephan Zappola (run) each had a hit for EB Magnet (7-4).

For Timothy Christian (1-8), Anthony Snyder singled and drove in a run.

Summit 2, New Providence 1

Sean Reilly doubled and drove in a run as New Providence fell to Summit. The Pioneers (5-10) got a quality start from Ethan Cifarelli (6 IP, 2 ER, 4 H, 1 BB, 1 K).

North Warren 2, South Hunterdon 1

No. 14th-seeded South Hunterdon fell to No. 15th-seeded North Warren in the opening round of the Hunterdon/Warren/Sussex Tournament. Dillon Gallagher had the lone hit for the Eagles.
