Baseball: Coldwater routs Hastings, Union City drops two at Maple Valley

HASTINGS – The Coldwater Cardinals had little trouble with their Interstate 8 foes on the road in Hastings on Tuesday, winning by scores of 11-1 and 16-0.

In game one it was an eight run fifth inning that turned a 1-1 tie on its head as the Cardinals rolled to the 11-1 win. Coldwater out hit Hastings 8-2 in the victory.

Evan Porter took the win on the mound for Coldwater after throwing five innings in the start, allowing two hits and one run with four walks and six strikeouts.

Owen Tappenden led the Cardinal offense in game one, finishing 2 for 4 with a single and a double with three RBIs and two runs scored.

Also recording multi-hit games was Drake Thornton who finished with two singles, two RBIs and a run scored while C. Calhoun added two singles and an RBI.

Game two saw Coldwater firing on all cylinders, defeating Hastings 16-0. Dayton Ennis held Hastings hitless through three innings of work on the mound as the freshman struck out seven batters in the win.

Ennis helped his own cause at the plate, finishing 2 for 4 with a single and a triple with an RBI while Thornton added two singles and two runs scored.

Also recording multiple hits in the win was Bryden Lackey with a single and a double with an RBI and two runs scored and C. Calhoun with two singles. Ethan Parker added a triple, three RBIs, and three runs scored.

With the two-game sweep Coldwater improves to 4-6 overall on the season. The Cardinals will next see action Thursday when they travel to Three Rivers.

Union City drops two on the road at Maple Valley

MAPLE VALLEY – The long trip to Vermontville Maple Valley got just a bit longer on the way home for the Union City baseball Chargers on Tuesday, as it was the Lions taking the two-game sweep in early Big 8 play.

Game one saw Maple Valley defeat Union City in walk-off fashion, winning 3-2.

The game stood tied at 2-2 entering the final inning of play, which saw Maple Valle lead off the inning with an infield single. After a steal of second by the Maple Valley baserunner a bunt sacrifice for Maple Valley’s hitter moved the runner over to third with only one out.

One pitch later it was Maple Valley’s McDonald hitting a walk-off single to left field, giving the Lions the dramatic 3-2 win.

Rick Austin took the loss on the mound for Union City after throwing a third of an inning in relief, allowing two hits and one run. Ryan Zweng made the start for Union City and was pulled after allowing one hit and one run with three strikeouts in two innings. Zweng was replaced by Ethan Neveraski who pitched four solid innings, allowing only one hit and one run with three walks and seven strikeouts.

Aidan Decker led the Union City offense, finishing 3 for 3 with two singles and a double and one run scored.

Also notching multiple hits was Tucker Zweng with two singles and an RBI.

Game two saw Maple Valley score early and often as they rolled to the 11-1 win over the visiting Chargers in five innings.

Maple Valley out hit Union City 8-3 in the win and took advantage of eight walks by the Charger pitching staff.

Alex Boyer took the loss on the mound for Union City after throwing two-thirds of an inning in the start, allowing one hit and four runs with three walks and one strikeout.

Rick Austin, Tucker Zweng, and Carson Liles all came in to pitch for the Chargers in the loss.

Ryan Zweng had the lone extra base hit for Union City with a double, while singles went to Owen Jackson and Rick Austin,

With the two-game loss Union City falls to 3-6 overall on the season and will face off with Waldron on Friday at Waldron.
