Baseball: Coldwater and Bronson split in Battle on US12; Union City splits with Centreville

COLDWATER – The Coldwater Cardinals and the Bronson Vikings met Friday night in a non-conference Branch County baseball clash, with the two teams battling to a split on the day.

Game one saw Coldwater use a big second inning to push their lead to 10-0. Bronson battled back with four in the top of the sixth however the Cardinals put it away with two in the bottom of the sixth to find the final score of 12-5. Coldwater out hit Bronson 9-2 in the win and took advantage of three Viking errors, compared to only one for the Cardinals.

Owen Tappenden took the win on the mound for Coldwater after throwing five innings, allowing one hit and two runs, one earned, with one walk and seven strikeouts.

Brayden Lackey and Logan Smiertka each had two hits in the game, while Drake Thornton, Ethan Parker, and Tappenden each recorded a double. Tappenden led the way with four RBIs while Thornton added two.

James Jourdan took the loss on the mound for Bronson after allowing eight hits and 10 runs, seven earned, in four innings. Jourdan also added four walks and three strikeouts.

Bronson notched two hits in the tough loss, with Warner Wotta hitting a double and Logan Long belting a three-run bases loaded triple.

Game two was a back-and-forth affair until Bronson broke it open in the fifth inning with eight runs, finding the final score of 12-5.

Wotta secured the win on the mound for Bronson after throwing one and two-thirds of an inning in relief during which he allowed two unearned runs with one walk and two strikeouts.

James Jourdan led the offense, going 2 for 3 with two runs scored and an RBI while Dawson Soergel added a double with two RBIs and a run scored. Logan Long also recorded a double.

Brayden Lackey took the loss on the mound for Coldwater after throwing an inning in relief. Lackey allowed three hits and seven runs, five earned, with five walks in the tough outing.

Drake Thornton and Lucas Wischmeyer both added doubles in the loss, with Wischmeyer and Brady Massey adding and RBI.

Union City splits with Centreville

UNION CITY – The Union City Chargers split with Centreville on Saturday, taking a heartbreaking game one loss and a big game two win.

Game one saw Centreville break a 5-5 tie with a run in the top of the seventh innings, which proved to be just enough for the 6-5 win.

Tucker Zweng took the loss on the mound in the game, throwing two innings while allowing three runs on no hits, one earned run, with two walks and two strikeouts.

Tucker’s older brother Ryan led the Charger offense with his first home run of the season, a solo shot to left field. Zweng finished with two RBIs and a run scored.

Eli Payne added a double while Owen Jackson chipped in with an RBI.

Game two saw Union City put away the game with four runs in the fifth inning to take the 8-5 win, despite being out hit 10-6.

Owen Jackson took the win on the mound after throwing five innings in relief, allowing five hits and no runs with five strikeouts and two walks.

Rick Austin hit his first home run at the high school level, a leadoff shot to centerfield to lead the Charger offense.

Ryan Zweng added a single and three runs scored while Carson Liles chipped in with a 2 for 4 effort, knocking in three runs while scoring one.
