Barstool Sports founder reviewed three Lexington pizza places. Here’s how they fared.

Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy has made another visit to the Bluegrass, and this time, he reviewed three pizza restaurants while he was in town.

And, thankfully, this time he didn’t get ejected from of any of them.

Four years ago, Portnoy gave Lexington’s Goodfellas one of his worst online video reviews ever after he was served what he described as an “ice cold” slice of pizza and was ordered off the patio.

That Goodfellas review is featured high up in the “Best of” section of Portnoy’s popular One Bite Pizza Reviews YouTube channel and has garnered 2.3 million views. The YouTube channel itself has nearly 800,000 subscribers.

Locals rallied around the restaurant, and on a return visit during the Breeders Cup’ in 2020, Portnoy made up with the establishment and this time gave it a much more favorable review.

One Bite Pizza Reviews: Joe Bologna’s, Mad Mushroom Pizza and LexLive

On this recent visit to Lexington, while once again in town for the Breeders’ Cup, Portnoy paid visits to Joe Bologna’s, Mad Mushroom Pizza and LexLive.

Joe Bologna’s location in a historic church made an impression.

“This gotta be top 10 looking pizzerias in the country,” Portnoy tweeted.

Joe B’s also scored points with Portnoy for its status as a longtime successful business, which he said tugs at his heartstrings.

“If you close your eyes like this and say take a bite ... you’re eating a very well-made Domino’s,” Portnoy said in his video review. “But it’s been around 50 years. I’m going to go 6.7.”

Portnoy gives scores based out of 10 and very few get near a perfect 10.

He gave Mad Mushroom a rating of 5.2.

Portnoy’s assessment: “This is drunk pizza. You order it probably at 2, 3 a.m. You definitely don’t order it at 11:30 a.m. on a Sunday like I just did.”

But he said the employee who served him “was super nice,” and “I don’t hate the crust.”

And he even learned a little something about Lexington’s collegiate landscape in the process.

“It said it was the best-voted pizza at Transylvania. I thought that was made up,” he said of the university.

LexLive’s pizza fared worst of all, though Portnoy was admittedly having a rough day when he tried it. He said he’d “lost all my money” at Keeneland, in a betting saga he posted about several times on his Twitter feed.

“Without even tasting it, I know it’s trash,” he said as he looked at the pizza before him.

His opinion did not change after he took a bite.

“0.04,” Portnoy proclaimed. “It can’t be worse.”

Barstool Sports frozen pizza; Portnoy’s recent legal battles

In September, Barstool Sports partnered with frozen food company Happi Foodi to launch its own pizza brand, One Bite Pizza, which is available in Walmart stores.

Portnoy has been in the news this month after a judge dismissed his defamation lawsuit against Insider.com.

Portnoy filed suit against the news outlet after an article last year accused of sexual misconduct, which Portnoy denied.
