Barbie's Issa Rae says Barbie Land set was a "pink wet dream"

Barbie star Issa Rae has recalled her hilarious first reaction to seeing the Barbie movie set in real life.

The actress certainly seemed taken with Barbie Land when she first stepped foot on the set for filming.

"It was a dream," she told Digital Spy in an exclusive interview. "It was a pink wet dream."

"It was beautiful. The childhood version of me just immediately got excited and it put me in the mood to be a doll. You're in a living dollhouse neighbourhood. It was everything I dreamed of."

Rae plays President Barbie in the Greta-Gerwig-directed movie, who resides at a pastel pink version of the US White House.

She wasn't the only cast member to have a fondness for the predominantly pink Barbie sets, with co-star America Ferrera surprised with her own reaction to Barbie Land.

"I was really moved by it, which was unexpected because I didn't play with Barbies growing up, so I didn't expect to feel such a nostalgia for it," she told Digital Spy.

"It reminded me of being a child and the magic of play things coming to life."

The Ugly Betty actress also confessed that having not grown up playing with the infamous dolls meant she had no interest in being a Barbie in the cast.

"I didn't want to be one of the Barbies, that wouldn't have been as compelling to me," she told us.

"To me, the message of this movie is that there is no one standard of beauty, there's no one right way to be beautiful, one right way to be smart, one right way to be even Barbie. We can embrace ourselves uniquely and celebrate that."

First reactions for Barbie have been overwhelmingly positive, with those lucky few who have already seen it full of praise.

"Barbie is a sharp, hilarious and joy-contagious satire of gender roles where the famous Mattel doll — and boyfriend Ken — go through an unexpected journey of self-realisation," says Digital Spy's Deputy Movies Editor Mireia Mullor in her review.

"It is as deliciously stupid as it is bright, a feminist fairytale where there's always room for dancing, rollerskating and beaching."

Barbie is released in cinemas on July 21.
