Barbie has overtaken The Dark Knight for a huge new box office record

Barbie has been smashing box office records left, right and centre — and now, the film has broken another one.

As reported by Deadline, the film has earned over $537 million at the US box office, making it Warner Bros' highest-grossing film ever in the States.

In second place, with just under $535 million? That would be The Dark Knight, one of the most acclaimed superhero films of all time, directed by Oppenheimer's Christopher Nolan.

This adds some additional intrigue Barbie's latest box office record break, as Nolan's Oppenheimer comprised one-half of the cinematic phenomenon Barbenheimer, where moviegoers flocked to cinemas for a double feature of Barbie and Oppenheimer when both debuted on July 21.

Barbie is the latest of 20 films to gross over $500 million in the US and has done it faster than Top Gun: Maverick and The Super Mario Bros Movie (in 21 days compared to 30 and 31 days, respectively).

Worldwide, the final Harry Potter film is Warner Bros' highest-grossing movie, but that could change by the end of Barbie's theatrical run. The film has already passed the $1 billion mark at the global box office.

The huge success of Barbie has led to toy company Mattel commissioning movies for a whole host of its properties, such as Hot Wheels, Uno and Polly Pocket. Emily in Paris star Lily Collins and Girls creator Lena Dunham are attached to the latter.

Recently, Ant-Man's Randall Park has called out Warner Bros — and Hollywood in general —for misunderstanding why Barbie has been dominating the box office.

"I feel like, just in general, this industry is taking the wrong lessons," he said. "For example, Barbie is this massive blockbuster, and the idea is: Make more movies about toys! No. Make more movies by and about women!"

Barbie is playing in cinemas now.
