Barbie movie beats Harry Potter box office record

Barbie has hit another box office milestone, beating a record previously held by Harry Potter.

The new movie, which comes from Greta Gerwig and stars Margot Robbie as the iconic doll, has been a huge commercial success, recently going past $1 billion globally.

The Warner Bros film has now become the studio's fastest movie to reach that record (17 days), beating previous holder Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2, which did it in 19 days back in 2011.

Deathly Hallows – Part 2 currently stands at Warner Bros' hightest-grossing movie ever with $1.34 billion, though there is a chance that Barbie could beat that record too.

Robbie previously predicted that Barbie could be a billion-dollar success, as she recently recalled her original pitch meeting.

"I think my pitch in the greenlight meeting was the studios have prospered so much when they're brave enough to pair a big idea with a visionary director," she told Collider.

"I gave a series of examples like, 'dinosaurs and [Steven] Spielberg' – pretty much naming anything that's been incredible and made a ton of money for the studios over the years. And I was like, 'And now you've got Barbie and Greta Gerwig'.

"And I think I told them that it'd make a billion dollars, which maybe I was overselling, but we had a movie to make."

While its success may seem like Barbie is primed for a sequel, it appears that a follow-up movie isn't as inevitable as thought, with a recent report revealing that Robbie, Gerwig and co-star Ryan Gosling haven't got deals in place for a second film.

Barbie is out now in cinemas.
