As season 2 of Euphoria aired on HBO, viewers were shocked when Barbie Ferreira announced that she would not be returning to the show's third season as Kat Hernandez. On August 24, 2022, Barbie first announced that she would not reprise her role as Kat Hernandez on the show's third season. She posted a heartfelt message accompanied by fan art created by her co-star, Hunter Schafer, on her Instagram Story. Rumors quickly surfaced regarding the star's departure, with some sources blaming creative differences between the actress and the show's creator, Sam Levinson.

On Monday, April 3, Barbie recently appeared on the Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard podcast, where she addressed the controversy surrounding her departure and revealed that her departure from the series was a "mutual decision."

Barbie denied reports of a feud and addressed rumors that she walked off-set due to creative differences. "When people ask me about season 2, it's usually they come at me with, like, I was some sort of victim to season 2, and I'm always like, 'No, it's OK, promise. It's good," she explained. "I actually did not walk off-set," she clarified. "I did sprain my ankle once and had to go get an X-ray. Maybe that's what they mean?"

According to Barbie, she decided to part ways with the series because she felt her character had limited room for growth. "I don't think there was a place for her to go," she explained. "I think there were places she could have gone. I just don't think it would have fit into the show. I don't know if it was going to do her justice, and I think both parties knew that I really wanted to be able to not be the fat best friend. I don't want to play that, and I think they didn't want that either."

Barbie also explained the struggle she and the show's creator had with finding a direction for Kat. "I felt like it was kind of a struggle for both parties. Sam, me... it was a struggle to find the continuation of her. So that was really hurtful watching it and seeing the fans get upset," she continued.

"I just felt like, maybe it's like I overstayed my welcome a little bit? So, for me, I actually felt good to be like, 'OK, I get to not worry about this, and we both don't get too worried about this,' because this is exhausting. According to Barbie, Levinson "writes for things that he relates to," and she doesn't "think he relates to Kat."

While she's made peace with her decision to leave the series, it took the actor some time to come to terms it. "I like Kat, so I get to go on my own path," she said. "At first, I was like, 'Oh my god, I'm a flop. I'm a loser.' It really has been a good thing."
