Barbie director confirms Doctor Who and Schitt's Creek stars were cut from film

Barbie casting director Allison Jones has revealed that several stars were cut from the film.

In an interview with Vanity Fair, Jones revealed there were a few actors who almost played the role of a Ken, but had to turn down the role.

She said that Schitt's Creek star Dan Levy – who plays David Rose in the sitcom – was offered one of the Ken parts in the movie.

Revealing that Saturday Night Live star Bowen Yang and Dear Evan Hansen actor Ben Platt had also turned down the role, Jones told the publication: "They were, I'm not kidding, really bummed they couldn't do it."

The casting director added that the role played by Michael Cera was first turned down by Jonathan Groff, who is taking on a "mysterious key role" in the upcoming Doctor Who series.

She recalled: "Dear, dear Jonathan Groff was like, 'I can't believe I'm typing this but I can't do Allan'."

However, Ken wasn't the only role that had a list of other contenders. Wonder Woman's Gal Gadot was considered to play one of the Barbies, but the star was unavailable.

"Gal Gadot is Barbie energy," leading star Margot Robbie previously told British Vogue.

"Because Gal Gadot is so impossibly beautiful, but you don’t hate her for being that beautiful because she’s so genuinely sincere, and she’s so enthusiastically kind, that it’s almost dorky."

Barbie set a new record with a huge box office debut as it beat Oppenheimer to top the US box office chart.

Film director Greta Gerwig sat down with Digital Spy ahead of the film's release and revealed how she was insistent that didn't ignore the controversial legacy of the Mattel doll.

"I think the thing we wanted to do was not deny how complicated she is and how there are so many things about her that are amazing and also like, 'Oh, I wish you hadn't done that'," she explained.

"I think that's what made it rich was being able to be in all the thorniness and not denying it."

Barbie is out now in cinemas.
