A new barbershop opened in Hobart and it's attached to a basketball court, gym l Streetwise

HOBART — Barbershop owner Daniel Gilbert was excited to see a unique neighborhood developing in Hobart, so he decided to start his own business there.

He relocated from Appleton to start MVP Barbershop at 740 Centerline Drive, in the same building as Team 1848 Basketball, a gym and basketball court for children.

Gilbert decided to move after Harry Boyce, the owner of the gym and a long-time friend, talked to him about opening a shop next to a basketball court in a growing community.

Opening MVP Barbershop included remodeling the space, Gilbert said, which was previously used as a realtors office.

"I felt like it was something unique," Gilbert said. "The neighborhood, the culture, to have a basketball (court), gym, weight room and barbershop all in one."

In Appleton, he worked at A+ Cuts in a strip mall, so traffic was higher and he had more clients. However, at the new location he owns the shop and has more growth opportunities as the only barbershop in the area.

"Here, I have to strategize ways to get people through the door," he said.

However, he is getting good feedback from clients who appreciate the quality of the haircuts and the welcoming space.

"Starting over, getting clients is a bit difficult," he said. "But the business is going good. So far I'm really blessed."

The shop is small with only two chairs, one he rents to his co-worker Juan Santiago. They both work with bookings through the MVP Barbershop website.

Gilbert said they offer several services, including haircuts, grooming, fades, designs and razor shaves. Prices vary depending on the customers' age and request. For example, haircuts without a design cost $25 for clients between 14 and 18 years old and $20 for clients under 14 years old. Seniors and veterans pay only $18.

They also offer a full MVP service for $65 which provides all the bells and whistles from haircut to beard trim and a facial steam.

The barbershop is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday to Friday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.
