Baker Mayfield is coming off the best season of his career in 2020 — leading to some heavy speculation about a potential contract extension with the Cleveland Browns. The fourth-year quarterback became eligible to receive multi-year deal earlier this offseason.

While some big money could be in order soon, Mayfield has elected to keep his focus on the field heading into the 2021 season.

“Everything happens for a reason and it’ll handle itself,” Mayfield said, per ESPN. “So, just worried about winning.”

Heading into minicamp earlier this offseason, Mayfield even went as far as to say that thinking about a potential extension is “a waste of time and energy.”

“The chips will fall where they’re supposed to,” he said. “The concern right now is winning and building a strong foundation for the season. That’s what everyone in this building should be concerned about.”

After he was drafted with the No. 1 overall pick in 2018, Mayfield served a couple lackluster seasons as the Browns starting QB. It wasn’t until this past year that the former Heisman Trophy winner really broke out of his shell.

Throwing for 3,563 yards, 26 touchdowns and eight interceptions, Mayfield led Cleveland to its best season finish in decades. Closing out the year with an 11-5 record, the Browns notched their first playoff appearance in over 18 years.

Claiming a Wild Card win over the Pittsburgh Steelers, the franchise also logged its first postseason victory in 26 years.

As his rookie contract comes to an end this offseason, the Browns have already exercised Mayfield’s fifth-year option that will pay him $18.86 million in 2022.

With contract details seemingly off his mind, Mayfield looks primed for another solid season in 2021.
