Baker Mayfield Explains The Motivation For His Statue Pose
Oklahoma honored former Sooners legend Baker Mayfield by unveiling the Heisman Trophy winner’s statue Friday night. The monument portrays the quarterback delivering a stiff arm.
Along with representing the notorious Heisman pose, this stance calls back to Mayfield stiff-arming his way into the end zone against Oklahoma State. As Mayfield told reporters Saturday, via Brandon Drumm of 247Sports, he couldn’t resist the chance to permanently jab Oklahoma’s geographic rivals.
“They gave me a couple of options and I thought no better way to keep a statue in the state of Oklahoma than for it to be a stiff-arm of your little brother. Forever, they have to deal with that one.”

Mayfield also joked that his infamous midfield flag plant at Ohio Stadium in 2017 “was never going to happen” because Oklahoma athletic director Joe Castiglione was “going to keep it pretty appropriate.”
The statue spawned plenty of jokes on social media among fans who didn’t see a resemblance to the quarterback. Yet Mayfield didn’t seem to mind, as he called the unveiling ceremony “surreal.”
Before the Cleveland Browns made him the No. 1 pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, Mayfield won the Heisman Trophy by compiling 4,627 passing yards and 43 passing touchdowns for Lincoln Riley’s 12-2 Sooners.
While Oklahoma’s tribute provided a nice reprieve for Mayfield, the disgruntled quarterback continues to wait for a trade from Cleveland.
