After a historic season with the Cleveland Browns that culminated in their first playoff win in decades, QB Baker Mayfield is eligible for a contract extension. But with the offseason nearly over and no deal on the table, will he get one?

In an interview with TheLandOnDemand.com, Mayfield’s agent Jack Mills made it clear that they have no intention of dragging out the extension process into next year. He said that they’re ready for a deal and don’t need to wait for other QBs to get extensions first.

“We’re not going to be dragging it out,” Mills said. “I think there’s been enough contracts done for quarterbacks lately that give us a pretty good idea of what the market is. And, of course, we know that the [salary] cap isn’t going up this year but it’s going up next year and next.

“We pretty much know what’s coming on down the road and what’s been done. We don’t have any particular reluctance about doing a deal.”

As for the timeframe of this deal, Mills seemed confident that one could be done before the end of the summer. Though he acknowledged that the Browns have control in this situation.

“But I think something will be done this summer,” Mills said. “As far as trying to get a deal done, I don’t know if it’ll get done. It’s something that would be pretty much in the team’s control.”

Baker Mayfield is heading into the fourth year of his rookie contract and but is eligible for an extension now.

Last year he went 11-5 as a starter, throwing for 3,563 yards and 26 touchdowns under head coach Kevin Stefanski. The Browns made the playoffs, ending their 18-year drought, and beat the rival Pittsburgh Steelers in the playoffs.

Mayfield has proven to be everything the Browns hoped for when they took him No. 1 overall in the 2018 draft.

Now it’s time for them to pay him for it.
