These Are the It Bags of 2024

Once upon a time, the idea of an It bag reigned supreme in the fashion accessories space. If you followed fashion, you had an inherent sense of what were the best trendy bags—the carryalls you needed because of their inherent chicness, or because you saw chic people, famous or not, carrying them in real life.
The internet has complicated this idea. No matter how much we fight it, we’re all suckers for targeted ads. The fashion items we are fed on our Instagram and TikTok feeds often get the best of us, triggering our impulse to shop with a quick “click to buy” prompt—and muddying the idea of pure desire and personal style. Influencers don’t help; nor do those crafty Substack shopping newsletters that are, by and large, just affiliate gold mines masquerading as well-written advice columns with quirky-cool personalities attached.
But it remains true that if a bag is truly delicious, it will market itself to the real ones, the fashion-hungry consumers sick of buying something just because they saw it on someone’s GRWM. Below, two Bazaar editors pinpoint the new It bags that have been popping up everywhere—not on our screens, but on the arms of people who care less about trends than about design.
Ironically, a bag’s rogue quality is what makes it stand out right now. The shape of the bag is the branding, not the logo nor the sales-fueled campaign behind it. Take for instance, the Alaïa Le Teckel bag, which is being carried by the most stylish shoppers like a hot-dog-shaped trophy. Its design is flawless, with that elongated shape (teckel is a common German name for a dachshund), buttery leather in a range of colors, and a long shoulder strap. You can dress it up or down and still fit all your stuff inside. The look is subtle, but manages to make a statement—a winning formula in a sea of pushy product.
Some of the It bags of previous years are making a comeback, too. Even if we’ve seen the Balenciaga City bag or the 2000s-inspired Miu Miu styles before, they still feel desirable for their built-in effortless cool. Call them the new classics.
Read on for the 11 bags that feel like this moment, even in a world dominated by algorithms.
XL Idaho Bag
I totally get the mania around the Margaux, but may I suggest an alternative? I think the Row’s Idaho shape offers the practicality and luxury of the Margaux, but is easier to find and feels a little bit more in-the-know. I have my eye on it for chic weekends upstate and as a catchall holdall for brunch and museum days. —Lynette Nylander, executive digital director

I would say the It bag that really emerged post–Fashion Week is the Teckel. Those handles are just so considered—roomy enough to sling over jackets—and it disappears into the body in the best way. It comes in an assortment of gorgeous colors and finishes, too, making it really the perfect all-day, all-night bag. —LN

Le City Medium Bag
There are some reissues that really hit, and Balenciga’s new take on the 2001 Le City bag is one of them. Demna’s version is a little bit sleeker and more subversive. It’s the kind of bag that hangs over the shoulder of the coolest person you know, someone who wears Chopova Lowena skirts and Simone Rocha Crocs. —Brooke Bobb, fashion news director

Picotin Lock Bag
While the Birkin and the Kelly continue to dominate, I actually have my eye on the chic and more understated Picotin. Its utilitarian shape is perfect for everyday use in NYC, and the best-in-class leather really speaks for itself. Not to sound too Goldilocks, but while the Birkin is too big for everyday and the Kelly too petite, there’s something about the Picotin that’s justttttttt right! —LN

This is the ultimate everything bag, with its buttery leather, waterdrop shape, and padded chain strap, which you can adjust to be long or short. It fits everything and looks impossibly chic dressed up or down. I’ve never gotten so many compliments on a bag—she’s literally my main squeeze! —BB
