Back to Black beats Civil War to debut top of the UK box office

Amy Winehouse biopic Back to Black has beaten dystopian drama Civil War to the top of the box office in the UK.

Both films opened last Friday (April 12), with Back to Black grossing £2.7 million in its first three days, while Civil War made £1.6 million, putting it in third place. Sandwiched between the two is Kung Fu Panda 4, which added another £1.8 million to its total (£17.3 million) across the last three days (via Screendaily).

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire and Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire came in fourth and fifth place, respectively.

In comparison to other music biopics, Back to Black didn't have as strong an opening as Bob Marley: One Love had in February (£4.2 million). However, that figure comes from a five-day opening 'weekend' due to its release on Wednesday, while its 12A age rating certificate meant it was accessible to a wider audience.

Bohemian Rhapsody and Rocketman had much stronger openings, with £9.5 million and £5.3 million initial grosses, but Back to Black performed better than Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody's £1.4 million opening and Nowhere Boy's £1.4 total box office gross.

In Digital Spy's review of Back to Black, we praised the strong cast but criticised the plotting for its "surface-level approach" that felt more like a romantic comedy.

Meanwhile, in our review of Civil War, we called it "a deep dive into a haunting, too-close-for-comfort modern war, boiling down current political tensions and bringing the all-too-seen imagery of armed conflicts into the pristine cities of the US."

Back to Black and Civil War are out in cinemas now.
