Do you wish games wouldn’t take so long to make? With a development cycle of five years or more, it can be a painful wait from initial announcement to eventual release.

As slow as that seems, we should sometimes be careful what we wish for. Remember that awful King Kong game that suffered the mockery of the internet last week? Yeah, it looks and plays terrible because it was only in development for a year.

Speaking to The Verge anonymously, a developer at IguanaBee revealed “the development process of this game was started in June of last year and it was aimed to end on June 2nd this year. So one year development process.”

Published by GameMill, Skull Island: Rise of Kong was ridiculed for poor graphics, cutscenes that seemingly replace animation with artwork, and poor technical performance.

According to The Verge’s report, GameMill has a reputation for churning out quick licensed games and working with smaller developers over short time periods.

“It was very common for us not to be provided with all the information about the project,” said a former employee of IguanaBee. “Which was quite frustrating when working because we had to improvise with the limited information we had on hand.”

Skull Island: Rise of Kong is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S/X and Nintendo Switch if you want to put yourself through the pain.
