The forthcoming Avengers: Twilight will show off a corrupt vision of the future, where Earth’s mightiest heroes force their will onto humanity.

The story, written by Chip Zdarsky, focuses on Steve Rogers, forced out of retirement to take on the new Avengers and attempt to restore the old team to its former glory. It promises to show heroes in a new villainous light, and introduce Avengers that have an entirely different connection to the heroes of today.

“My goal with anything is to create a story that is both new reader friendly and also welcomes in older readers who will enjoy the references sprinkled throughout," Zdarsky said.

"I think if you have a base knowledge of Marvel super heroes, there’s really something for you here. And getting a chance to do something that’s self-contained in six issues with one consistent artist throughout is my favorite kind of project because those are types of books you can sell forever.”

Avengers: Twilight is due for release this January and is a six-issue self-contained story. It features covers by Alex Ross and artwork from Avengers Inc and X-Force’s Daniel Acuna.

“This bold and thought-provoking saga that tackles the very nature of being a superhero will also slowly peel back the layers of a shadowy history, exposing the shocking events that caused Earth’s mightiest heroes to fall so far,” added Marvel.

While the Avengers seems to be going strong in comic books, its cinematic counterpart is struggling as part of the MCU. Marvel seems to be on the brink of dropping Kang as a major villain for future movies, as it seeks to regain some of the franchises' magic.
