Avengers: The Kang Dynasty loses its director
Avengers: The Kang Dynasty director Destin Daniel Cretton has exited the movie.
Deadline reported that the filmmaker has reached an amicable decision with Marvel Studios to leave the sequel but will remain involved in other MCU projects.
Cretton is producing the Wonder Man TV series for Disney+, and is developing a sequel to his previous Marvel hit film Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. According to the new outlet, the director is also speaking with Marvel about additional projects.
The filmmaker maintains a working relationship with Disney through producing the series American Born Chinese, starring Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan, as well.
The exact status of the Avengers sequel had been somewhat in question recently, given star Jonathan Majors's ongoing legal situation.
There were reports that Marvel Studios bosses were considering bringing back the original Avengers team — Robert Downey Jr, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth and Mark Ruffalo — for a future project.
It was reported that Kevin Feige and his top executives discussed this plan at a recent retreat for the MCU creative team, though Feige has since downplayed any talk of the original Avengers returning.
"We did not discuss that at the retreat, is the truth," he told Entertainment Tonight. "We're doing a project with Scarlett [Johansson], I love Robert [Downey Jr], he's a part of the family, but in terms of returning we'll have to see."
The previously announced plan was for Avengers: The Kang Dynasty to lead into a sequel called Avengers: Secret Wars, which is expected to be written by Loki's Michael Waldron.
Secret Wars takes its name, if not direct inspiration, for a 1984 comics crossover event where various Marvel heroes and villains were forced to battle on a patchwork planet known as Battleworld.
Avengers: The Kang Dynasty is currently set for release on May 1, 2026.
