Avengers: The Kang Dynasty Gets Loki, Secret Wars Writer

Avengers: The Kang Dynasty has signed up a writer who has been responsible for some of Marvel’s most recent successes.

The Avengers sequel will be written by Michael Waldron, according to Deadline, the writer of Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness, showrunner for Loki Season 1, and the creative already signed to pen Avengers: Secret Wars.

The decision to tap Waldron for writing duties on the next two Avengers movies makes sense, and creates some stability for Marvel, which is currently going through a shaky patch.

Avengers: The Kang Dynasty is due for release May 2026, with Avengers: Secret Wars due a year later in May, 2027.

Marvel’s The Marvels (I know!) has received a lukewarm reception at the box office, amid reports that the studio is struggling with rewrites, production issues, rushed effects and the legal problems surrounding Kang actor Jonathan Majors.

Waldron has already briefly worked with Majors and the Kang character in Loki Season 1, and this appointment suggests Marvel is happy to continue with that character as the main villain for a wave of movies and TV shows. Kang has been central to last year’s Ant Man and The Wasp: Quantumania and Loki Season 2.

The outgoing director of Avengers: The Kang Dynasty remains with Marvel, working on the sequel to Shang Chi: The Legend of the Ten Rings and TV show Wonder Man.

While both Avengers movies are a way off, 2024 is a fallow year for Marvel at the cinema now that Captain America: Brave New World and Thunderbolts have been moved out to 2025. Only Deadpool 3 is on track for release next year, a title that’s adjacent to the main MCU storytelling.
