Gordon Cormier (The Stand) stars as Avatar Aang, a 12-year-old boy who awakens from a 100-year ice nap to discover that he is the last living airbender and must journey to restore harmony and balance to the world. The show’s principal cast also includes Kiawentiio (Anne With an E) as waterbender Katara, Ian Ousley (13 Reasons Why) as Katara’s brother Sokka, Dallas Liu (PEN15) as Aang’s nemesis Prince Zuko, Paul Sun-Hyung Lee (The Mandalorian) as Zuko’s mentor General Iroh, and Daniel Dae Kim (Lost) as Zuko’s father Fire Lord Ozai.

The series is described as an “authentic adaptation” of Nickelodeon’s Avatar: The Last Airbender, an animated series that aired for three seasons from 2005 to 2008. An unmitigated phenomenon, Airbender spawned a spinoff series, The Legend of Korra, which aired for four seasons from 2012 to 2014.

Albert Kim serves as showrunner of Avatar‘s eight-episode first season, executive-producing alongside Jabbar Raisani, Dan Lin, Lindsey Liberatore and Michael Goi.

Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time that this franchise has received the live-action treatment. The Last Airbender, a 2010 film directed by M. Night Shyamalan, drew intense ire from critics and fans alike. It currently boasts a score of 5% on Rotten Tomatoes.
