Who’s available, who’s still out for Kentucky against Duquesne on Friday night?

Kentucky will have one of its injured players back on the basketball court Friday night.

UK point guard Sahvir Wheeler will make his 2022-23 season debut against Duquesne after missing the Wildcats’ opener against Howard earlier in the week.

Oscar Tshiebwe and Daimion Collins will remain sidelined for UK on Friday.

John Calipari had said last week that he would be “somewhat surprised” if Tshiebwe played against Duquesne, adding that the UK star would be limited to 10-15 minutes Friday if he did make an appearance. “Just to get his legs under him,” Calipari said.

Tshiebwe underwent a procedure on his knee Oct. 13 and missed the entirety of Kentucky’s preseason exhibition schedule as a result. He was expected to be ready to return for UK’s season opener Monday night, but the Cats are being careful with his recovery at the beginning of a long season, with the team’s first major test expected to come next: Michigan State on Tuesday night in Indianapolis for the Champions Classic.

It’s not yet clear if Tshiebwe will return for the game against the Spartans. Calipari said before Friday’s game that he had still not returned to practice.

Wheeler left UK’s first exhibition game Oct. 30 with a knee injury, and Calipari later confirmed that it was the same knee he tweaked earlier in the preseason, a setback that kept him out of the team’s Blue-White Game in Pikeville. Wheeler did not play in the team’s final exhibition game Nov. 3 or in Monday’s season opener. Wheeler returned to practice Thursday, and Calipari said before the game Friday that he would probably play only 10-15 minutes against Duquesne.

Tshiebwe and Wheeler were two of five players named to the all-Southeastern Conference preseason team at SEC media day last month, with Tshiebwe earning conference player of the year honors going into the 2022-23 season.

Collins is currently in Texas following the unexpected death of his father, Ben Collins, last week. The UK sophomore returned home to Atlanta, Texas, late last week to be with his family, then rejoined the Kentucky team for a few days following Monday’s season opener against Howard.

There was a private family ceremony scheduled for Collins’ father Friday, with funeral services to be held Saturday.

Ben Collins passed away Nov. 1 while visiting his son in Lexington. He was 43 years old.

There was a moment of silence in his honor before the team’s final exhibition game against Kentucky State two days later, and Calipari has spoken multiple times about wanting Collins to spend as much time as he needs away from the team during this difficult time for his family.

“This has been a rough deal,” the UK coach said after Monday’s season opener. “You know, every person grieves differently. And there’s nothing you can say to change that grief. It’s just, ‘We are here for you, we love you.’ …

“But I think getting in the gym, getting around the guys — he’ll start that climb back. But it’s just, just awful.”

Collins has not played since the Cats’ exhibition opener against Missouri Western State on Oct. 30. He is expected to rejoin the team for good next week, though Kentucky’s next opponent — Michigan State on Tuesday — might be a tough spot for Collins to make his season debut. The Cats play South Carolina State on Thursday in Rupp Arena before heading to Spokane for a game against No. 2 Gonzaga on Nov. 20.

Calipari said Friday that he and members of the Wildcats’ staff are planning to travel to Texas for Saturday’s services.
