Ava DiFiore, Jack Kenyon and Tyler DiCecco are this week's ProJo Players of Week
Who won our first Providence Journal Player of the Week polls of the spring high school sports seasons?
We saw winners — two juniors and a senior — from across Rhode Island. Here they are:
Ava DiFiore, Ponaganset, Softball
DiFiore got the job done at the plate and in the circle for Chieftains. She opened spring vacation with a five-inning gem in a 10-0 win over Toll Gate, helping her own cause with two hits and an RBI. Playing Barrington later in the week. DiFiore went 2-for-2 with two RBI as the Chieftains took care of the Eagles. In our weekly poll, the junior garnered 40% (838) of the 2,073 votes cast. Guiliana Ialongo, of La Salle, was second with 36%.
Jack Kenyon, Westerly, Boys Volleyball
Kenyon stepped up and led the Bulldogs with 21 digs, 18 kills and 3 aces in a 3-2 (20-25, 25-19, 20-25, 27-25, 15-8) win over Woonsocket last week. And in a loss to Barrington, the senior recorded seven kills, two blocks and two aces. Kenyon got 593 votes, or 46% of the 1,298 votes cast in the weekly poll. Tom Matchett, of North Smithfield, placed second with 26%.
Tyler DiCecco, East Providence, Baseball
The Townies junior helps make up one of the state's deepest pitching rotations, and last week he threw 6 1/3 strong innings in a 2-0 victory over Barrington, allowing four hits and striking out eight. The Bishop Hendricken transfer pulled 1,782 votes, or 42% of the 4,219 votes cast. Antony Colucci, of Coventry, was second with 35%.
