Australia vs Argentina LIVE: Rugby Championship result and reaction as Pumas beat Wallabies

Juan Martin Gonzalez scored a late winner as Argentina stunned Australia 34-31 in the Rugby Championship to leave the Wallabies in disarray and without a win two games into the second Eddie Jones era.

Australia had scored two quick tries late in the game to overturn a 10-point deficit and take a 31-27 lead with five minutes remaining but the Pumas loose forward dived over a ruck on the Wallabies line to secure a famous victory.

Cheered on by a small but noisy band of their compatriots at the same Parramatta Stadium where they first beat the All Blacks in 2020, the Pumas secured only a third win over the Wallabies on Australian soil.

Samu Kerevi, Mark Nawaqanitawase, Len Ikitau and Nic White scored Australia’s tries, while Jeronimo de la Fuente, skipper Julian Montoya and Mateo Carreras also crossed for the Pumas.

Australia left in disarray as last-gasp Argentina try secures stunning Rugby Championship win

Australia captain James Slipper

“Gutted is one word that comes to mind. We turned up and started playing some good rugby, but kept taking the pressure off the Argentinians and they kept coming back. Ill-discipline really hurt us tonight, again. The yellow card, penalties putting us in the wrong end of the field. You can’t win Test matches playing that sort of rugby.

“We have to review hard, train it. There’s a few of us who have to look at those individual penalties and rectify it pretty quickly. Performances like that, we won’t go far at the World Cup.”

Some Argentina reaction here.

Pablo Matera said:

“We love coming here. A lot of things happened in this stadium, beating the All Blacks for the first time, so it’s a special venue for us. We enjoy coming here.

“We knew after last week we could play a lot better, and after this game. We have to keep on the same road, but we’re going to take one day to enjoy this win.”

Pumas captain Julian Montoya said:

“First of all, let me say thank you to all the supporters who came here, they were very loud and I want to say thank you to them and I hope they are proud.

“Too much drama, I prefer a bit less, but we need to enjoy this win because we worked really and bounced back from a tough game [against New Zealand].

“We want to be a team that fights for every contact. We know the game is not going to be perfect, but it’s how we handle the moments. This is not enough, there are still a lot of things to improve. We’ll enjoy the win, but straight away we need to get better.”

Here’s what Mark Nawaqanitawase had to say after that defeat. Nawaqanitawase’s try on 76 minutes looked to have given the Wallabies the win but it wasn’t to be.

“That was a tough game. Credit to them, right until the end they dug in. There are a few things we need to work on but it’s obviously disappointing.

“I feel like I’m having fun out there. I only get put in those positions with the boys working hard off me. I try to look for the ball and want to help out. I wish I could have done more to get us those final few points to get the win, but that’s the way it goes.

“If we get rid of a few discipline errors we can hold the ball a bit more and use our attack. I think they had most of the ball the whole game. Hopefully next game we can get rid of those errors.”

That was Argentina’s first win since beating England at Twickenham, while Eddie Jones is still looking for his first victory since becoming Australia head coach earlier this year...

Juan Martin Gonzalez’s last-gasp try capped off a thrilling match and gave Argentina just a fifth win over the Wallabies since 1991. Great stuff! With a rampant New Zealand up next, Australia may end this Rugby Championship winless...

TRY! Australia 31-34 ARGENTINA (Juan Martin Gonzalez, 79 mins)

12:49 , Luke Baker

Tight with the forwards, trying the short side.

AND IT’S A TRY! Juan Martin Gonzalez gets over! Argentina have won it!

Gonzalez picks from the back of the ruck, dummies a pass right and dives over the top in a gap that shouldn’t be there. A long look from referee Marius Joncker and the try is awarded! Australia want a TMO review for a potential knock-on a couple of phases back but nothing doing.

Conversion good and that’s full-time! Incredible!

Australia 31-27 Argentina, 78 mins

12:47 , Luke Baker

Maul takes them within a couple of metres, a pick and go to inches away for the Pumas!

Australia 31-27 Argentina, 78 mins

12:47 , Luke Baker

No punishment for Kerevi. Argentina kick to the corner. Attacking lineout to try and win it.

Australia 31-27 Argentina, 77 mins

12:45 , Luke Baker

Is there one last twist in this match and a way back for Argentina? A penalty or drop goal won’t be enough, it has to be a try. They’ve got about three minutes.

TMO review as Samu Kerevi may have put a late hit on Mateo Carreras after a kick through.

TRY! AUSTRALIA 31-27 Argentina (Mark Nawaqanitawase, 76 mins)

12:42 , Luke Baker

OH MY WORD! A length-of-the-field interception try from Mark Nawaqanitawase to put Australia on top.

The Pumas go left and then right, getting close to the line. But over on the left, a flat pass is read by Nawaqanitawase and Super Rugby’s top try-scorer won’t be caught.

He races fully 90 metres and dives over under the posts. Easy conversion and Australia have turned this match around!

Australia 24-27 Argentina, 75 mins

12:41 , Luke Baker

The crowd are really into this now and it’s in the balance. End to end stuff! Tom Wright tries an ill-advised offload and Argentina have possession in the 22.

TRY! AUSTRALIA 24-27 Argentina (Samu Kerevi, 72 mins)

12:40 , Luke Baker

Australia strike right back and it’s game on!

Marika Koroibete punches his way down the left flank, pass inside to Quade Cooper running a great line.

Tackled a couple of metres short but good awareness from Cooper to pop pass from the floor to Samu Kerevi who goes over for the try. Great play by the Aussie back-line.

Cooper about four metres in from the left touchline and he nails the conversion! Within three points

TRY! Australia 17-27 ARGENTINA (Mateo Carreras, 69 mins)

12:37 , Luke Baker

Is that the killer blow? Mateo Carreras shows his pace and shiftiness to score.

Argentina reverse the field to the left, pop pass to Carreras running a great line and he slides outside David Porecki before arcing his run to touch down in the corner. Great play by the winger.

Good conversion from out wide by Boffelli and the Pumas lead by 10 points with 10 minutes left!

Australia 17-20 Argentina, 68 mins

12:35 , Luke Baker

Rebels flanker Josh Kemeny on for his Australia debut, while Nahuel Tetaz Chaparro on in the front row for the Pumas for Thomas Gallo.

Good scrum by Argentina but huge tackle by Samu Kerevi. Boom!

Australia 17-20 Argentina, 67 mins

12:34 , Luke Baker

Tate McDermott on for Nic White at scrum-half. He’ll have to help defend first up as Argentina reach the 22.

Good drift defence by the Wallabies and the Pumas are almost back to halfway. Mateo Carreras kicks through in hope more than expectation but it’s knocked on and a Pumas scrum on the 22.

Australia 17-20 Argentina, 65 mins

12:31 , Luke Baker

A rare bit of kick tennis from these two teams but Marika Koroibete decides to run back and makes good yards before Fraser McReight makes some more.

Ah, but it’s knocked on as McReight tries an offload. A bit of afters from both teams - Matias Moroni and Rob Valetini getting involved.

Moroni pushed a man on the floor but Valetini’s reaction was disproportionate according to the refs so penalty Argentina.

Australia 17-20 Argentina, 63 mins

12:27 , Luke Baker

Quade Cooper makes a few yards, then nice quick hands out to Marika Koroibete but well covered.

Hmmm, Australia going backwards here, back outside the 22 after a losses pass. Then Allan Alaalatoa knocks on when not really looking. Missed opportunity but good defence by the Pumas.

Loosehead prop Angus Bell on for James Slipper.

Australia 17-20 Argentina, 62 mins

12:25 , Luke Baker

Australia immediately back on the attack. A lineout around the Argentina 22.

Some news on Len Ikitau who injured his shoulder scoring the opening try. He’s off to hospital for a scan.

PENALTY! Australia 17-20 ARGENTINA (Emiliano Boffelli, 60 mins)

12:24 , Luke Baker

Argentina win the turnover penalty at the breakdown. Nic White looks unimpressed but the referee deems the ball was out and could legally be played.

Emiliano Boffelli, with his unique hunched-over stance, will have a pop from near halfway to the left of the posts.

Line good and the length as well! Great kick!

Australia 17-17 Argentina, 58 mins

12:21 , Luke Baker

Poor kick by Emiliano Boffelli, out on the full so it’s an Australian lineout back in the Pumas half.

But Argentina steal the set-piece. Good recovery work!

Australia 17-17 Argentina, 57 mins

12:20 , Luke Baker

Oof, big hit involving Samu Kerevi. Lucio Cinti makes decent ground but good defence by Australia as they tie up the Pumas and drive them into touch.

Matt Philip, the lock who has just come on for the impressive Will Skelton, among those involved.

TRY! AUSTRALIA 17-17 Argentina (Nic White, 53 mins)

12:17 , Luke Baker

Great vision by Nic White and he snipes over for the try.

Solid scrum, White looks to go left but pressure from Gonzalo Bertranou forces him back right and there’s no protection there as the Pumas have over-committed, so he snipes round the edge of the scrum and over for the score.

Easy conversion and we’re back level

Australia 10-17 Argentina, 52 mins

12:16 , Luke Baker

Lineout secured and Australia up to five metres. Carter Gordon, then Quade Cooper probe the line but another penalty coming.

Take the gimme three? Nope, a five-metre scrum.

Australia 10-17 Argentina, 50 mins

12:14 , Luke Baker

Decent carry by Rob Valetini as he powers into contact.

Then a bit of a cheap shot on Aussie scrum-half Nic White, off the ball and from the side by Pablo Matera. Just a penalty and the Wallabies kick to the corner. A good chance here.

Agustin Creevy on for Julian Montoya. Veteran hooker for veteran hooker

Australia 10-17 Argentina, 48 mins

12:12 , Luke Baker

Big turnover on halfway for Australia as Juan Martin Gonzalez takes too long to use the ball at the back of a scrum.

Richie Arnold’s sin-bin is over, so the Wallabies are back to a full complement of 15, although they trail by seven points now.

TRY! Australia 10-17 ARGENTINA (Julian Montoya, 46 mins)

12:10 , Luke Baker

Tomas Lavanini has a look but short. But then Julian Montoya does get over!

Gets outside the middle of Allan Alaalatoa who’s protecting the ruck, ball in his outside arm and has enough leverage to churn the legs to get over the line. Just veteran quality form Montoya close to the line.

Easy conversion and Argentina make the most of the man advantage to lead.

Australia 10-10 Argentina, 45 mins

12:08 , Luke Baker

Julian Montoya peels off the maul and barrels into defenders. Five metres out for the visitors.

Australia 10-10 Argentina, 44 mins

12:07 , Luke Baker

Early maul engagement from the Wallabies, another penalty coming.

Argentina try the cross-kick, Rodrigo Isgro catches, steps inside Tom Wright and has to score. But no!

Wright hangs on to a bit of him Samu Kerevi comes steaming across and Isgro ends up with his back to the line and doesn’t get the ball down. Great defence but the winger has to finish that...

Australia 10-10 Argentina, 43 mins

12:05 , Luke Baker

Unfortunately, Alemanno can’t continue. A real shame as he’s a rock at the heart of the Argentine pack.

Lucas Paulos comes on. Carreras kicks to the corner from the penalty, although the lineout will be about ten metres out.

Australia 10-10 Argentina, 43 mins

12:04 , Luke Baker

Matias Alemanno is down for Argentina and looks in a bit of pain as he gets caught underneath a ruck. Nasty. It’s his right leg being tested.

When we resume, it’s another Pumas penalty.

Australia 10-10 Argentina, 42 mins

12:01 , Luke Baker

Australia win the kick-off as Mark Nawaqanitawase leaps highest (team winning their own kick-off has been a theme in this match) but can’t take advantage as they’re pinged at the breakdown.

Argentina lineout outside the 22, with about five and half minutes of Arnold’s sin-bin left.

Australia 10-10 Argentina, 40 mins

Back underway in Sydney. Ths match is bang in the balance.

HALF-TIME! Australia 10-10 Argentina

11:48 , Luke Baker

And that’s oranges! A compelling first half where Australia raced into a 10-0 lead thanks to Len Ikitau’s try but Argentina hit back.

Jeronimo de la Fuente powered over to level things up and the Pumas really should have been ahead at the brek as they failed to convert back-to-back five-metre scrums against a seven-man Wallaby pack.

Richie Arnold will still be in the sin-bin for the first few minutes of the second half but Australia will be delighted with how that ended.

Australia 10-10 Argentina, 40+2 mins

11:45 , Luke Baker

WHAT A SCRUM! At the key moment, the Aussie front row of Allan Alaalatoa, David Porecki and James Slipper come up big!

Porecki gets under Julian Montoya, forces him up and it’s an Australia penalty. A huge moment in this game as the 14-man Wallabies escape to half-time level

Australia 10-10 Argentina, 40 mins

11:43 , Luke Baker

Scrum won, another penalty advantage. Juan Martin Gonzalez tries the short side but is stopped after a spin.

Then held up over the line, so back we come for the penalty. Scrum again.

SIN-BIN! Australia 10-10 Argentina, (Richie Arnold, 39 mins)

11:42 , Luke Baker

In fact it’s Argentina who end the half on top! They get the ball back and surge into Australian territory.

Great yards made down the left and they look set to score but a retreating Carter Gordon makes the interception. Pumas get the ball back at that ruck though and have tons of men over on the right.

Decent quick hands, they get stopped metres short but it’s a penalty when the Wallabies slow the ball illegally and Richie Arnold is sent to the sin-bin. Plus a five-metre penalty for Argentina and they’ll take the scrum to try and score on the stroke of half-time.

Australia 10-10 Argentina, 37 mins

11:38 , Luke Baker

Good boot clear by the Pumas for a solid touch. Can Australia set an attacking platform just before half-time?

Australia 10-10 Argentina, 36 mins

11:37 , Luke Baker

That is classy maul defence by Argentina! From the lineout, Australia try to march over the line but the Pumas stay strong, Tomas Lavanini worms his way through to the ball, holds it up and they win the turnover.

Big celebrations by the pack and why not! That’s as good as a try for them, although still got a five-metre scrum to execute properly.

Australia 10-10 Argentina, 35 mins

11:36 , Luke Baker

Great scrum by Australia as they obliterate the Argentine front row on halfway and win the penalty, which Quade Cooper boots miles into touch in the Pumas 22.

Australia 10-10 Argentina, 34 mins

11:35 , Luke Baker

Here’s that opening try by Len Ikitau, by the way. Sadly his shoulder injury suffered there later forced him off.

Australia 10-10 Argentina, 30 mins

11:32 , Luke Baker

WHAT A TACKLE! Try-saving in fact. Argentina spill the ball in the Australia half, Carter Gordon scoops it up and the whizz kid is away down the left wing.

He looks sure to score but a brilliant chase by Lucio Cinti and a desperate, diving tap tackle does just enough to trip Gordon into touch about 10 metres from the try-line. Great rugby all round!

TRY! Australia 10-10 ARGENTINA, (Jeronimo de la Fuente, 25 mins)

11:26 , Luke Baker

Argentina probe and probe and finally get the breakthrough as Jeronimo de la Fuente burrows over!

It’s great patience by the Pumas as they get into the 22, then work to five metres out and keep things tight with the forwards.

Good, disciplined defence by Australia but eventually so many men get sucked in that Bertranou flat passes out to De la Fuente who splits two men and crashes over.

Boffelli nails the conversion and we’re all level in Sydney.

Australia 10-3 Argentina, 22 mins

11:22 , Luke Baker

Mark Nawaqanitawase soars high to grab the kick-off but loses the ball on landing. Unlucky.

Carter Gordon looks to be playing at 12 by the way, with Samu Kerevi out to 13. Shades of Marcus Smith-Owen Farrell or even George Ford-Owen Farrell with two No 10s as a double playmaker pivot. Eddie Jones doing what he knows!

PEANLTY! Australia 10-3 ARGENTINA (Emiliano Boffelli, 20 mins)

11:20 , Luke Baker

Simple kick for Emiliano Boffelli from bang in front and Argentina are on the board

Australia 10-0 Argentina, 19 mins

11:19 , Luke Baker

Matias Alemanno scampers through, maybe more marauds, given his height. More possession in the 22 for the Pumas anyway.

Gonzalo Bertranou wants runners as Argentina keep it tight, before a couple of probes with the backs. Solid defence by the Wallabies so far. Eventually a penalty as Allan Alaalatoa gets caught off his feet at the breakdown and they’ll kick at goal.

Australia 10-0 Argentina, 18 mins

11:17 , Luke Baker

Really good defensive set from Australia, maintaining their shape. Santiago Carreras tries the stabbed grubber but Marika Koroibete is quick to turn and touch down in his own in-goal area for a goal-line drop-out.

Ah, bad news for the Wallabies. Len Ikitau hasn’t recovered from injuring his shoulder while scoring that try and he’s forced off. On comes Carter Gordon - the talented young No 10. May be that he goes to 15 and Tom Wright to 13? We’ll see.

Australia 10-0 Argentina, 16 mins

11:15 , Luke Baker

Argentina probe down the left through Mateo Carreras. Then they go right and Rodrigo Isgro has a half-break but Samu Kerevi makes a superb tackle.

Up to the five-metre line though.

Australia 10-0 Argentina, 15 mins

11:14 , Luke Baker

The spider cam cables get git by a Gonzalo Bertranou box kick but we play on. Decent attacking lineout opportunity for the Pumas but they can’t execute, stolen by Australia.

A better lineout this time from Argentina. But then great work by Allan Alaalatoa at the breakdown to steal the ball, only for the visitors to steal it straight back. They’re up to the 22 now.

Australia 10-0 Argentina, 13 mins

11:12 , Luke Baker

The kick-off is the one area that Australia have looked sloppy so far, another one fumbled but Skelton tidies up and no harm done.

PENALTY! AUSTRALIA 10-0 Argentina (Quade Cooper, 12 mins)

11:11 , Luke Baker

Good work by the Australian forwards again and they win a penalty. Right in front of the posts, a few metres outside the 22, and Quade Cooper makes no mistake.

Australia 7-0 Argentina, 10 mins

11:09 , Luke Baker

Illegal cleanout from Argentina, forced by Will Skelton and Australia move up past halfway for the lineout.

Skelton has been involved at the breakdown a couple of times already.

Australia 7-0 Argentina, 8 mins

11:07 , Luke Baker

Argentina debutant Rodrigo Isgro jumps well from the kick-off to snatch it away and give Los Pumas possession in the attacking third. The ex-sevens star showing his athleticism.

A grubber kick goes to touch though, Jed Holloway claims the lineout well but the clearance clear is half charged down. Another good attacking platform for Argentina.

TRY! AUSTRALIA 7-0 Argentina, (Len Ikitau, 5 mins)

11:06 , Luke Baker

Good maul by Australia marching towards halfway and then they win a penalty. Quickly-taken and Tom Wright is suddenly in the Argentina 22.

And Australia think they’ve scored! Worked wide with a looped pass from Quade Cooper to Len Ikitau who tries to go over in the corner. Emiliano Boffelli covering with the tackle, aiming to push him into touch.

It’s no try on the field but we go to the TMO and it’s a TRY! Grounding is good! Ikitau has hurt his shoulder during the score but hopefully he can continue.

Superb conversion from the touchline by Quade Cooper. Aussies on top

PENALTY MISS! Australia 0-0 Argentina, 3 mins

11:02 , Luke Baker

Wow! That’s a collector’s item. A very kickable penalty for Emiliano Boffelli, who is normally metronomic from the tee.

But he hits the right upright from the 22, to the left of the posts. A missed opportunity. Pumas are then offside trying to block the clearance kick, so an Australia penalty.

Australia 0-0 Argentina, 2 mins

11:00 , Luke Baker

Lovely scything run from Lucio Cinti cuts through the Australian defence with a sidestep of Len Ikitau and finds Carreras to take the Pumas into the 22.

A stabbed grubber kick through is placed behind Tom Wright but the ball goes dead before Mateo Carreras can get there. Back for an Argentina penalty. Good start by the visitors.

KICK-OFF! Australia vs Argentina

10:58 , Luke Baker

We’re underway! Santiago Carreras boots the ball into the air and it’s safely claimed just outside the 22.

Australia vs Argentina

10:57 , Luke Baker

‘Advance Australia Fair’ sung by Justin Smith (with help from the stadium as a whole). A bit more grandiose than the Argentine anthem but another good one.

Right, kick-off is now imminent at CommBank Stadium in Sydney. Will Australia or Argentina bounce back from last week’s slightly embarrassing losses?

Australia vs Argentina

It’s national anthem time. Argentina’s is a jaunty little number as we know, although has one of the longest intros on earth - a lot of instrumental before you reach the lyrics. Still a banger though.

Australia vs Argentina

10:52 , Luke Baker

The players run out on to the pitch with the light show flashing away. Must admit, I’d temporarily forgotten that Australia like to pretend a match is going to kick off at one time but not even bring the players on to the pitch until five minutes or so after that.

It’ll be closer to 11am BST by the time we actually kick off than the billed 10.45am.

Australia vs Argentina - Eddie Jones vs Michael Cheika

10:50 , Luke Baker

It’s two Aussies and, in fact, Wallabies head coaches past and present on the sidelines this morning. Eddie Jones and Michael Cheika have a complicated history but there seems to be a mutual respect there these days.

Jones is looking for his first win in his latest spell as Australia boss, while Cheika would love nothing more than getting one over on his homeland as coach of the Pumas

Australia vs Argentina odds

10:30 , Luke Baker

Given that Argentina have beaten Australia just four times since 1990, and only once on Australian soil in that period, the Wallabies are unsurprisingly favourites for this clash.

They’ll have to play better than last weekend to get a first win for Eddie Jones in his latest spell as boss though

TEAM NEWS: Argentina hand debut to Rodrigo Isgro

10:20 , Luke Baker

Argentina boss Michael Cheika has also wielded the axe for the clash against his homeland, bringing in four new faces after their All Blacks mauling.

Ex-sevens star Rodrigo Isgro makes his debut on the wing, while centre Jeronimo de la Fuente is given the run of the No 12 jersey. Prop Francisco Gomez Kodela and flanker Santiago Grondona are the other alterations as Juan Martin Gonzalez switches to No 8 despite a sub-par performance last weekend.

Argentina XV: Emiliano Boffelli; Rodrigo Isgro, Lucio Cinti, Jeronimo De La Fuente, Mateo Carreras; Santiago Carreras, Gonzalo Bertranou; Thomas Gallo, Julian Montoya (c), Francisco Gomez Kodela, Matias Alemanno, Tomas Lavanini, Pablo Matera, Santiago Grondona, Juan Martin Gonzalez

Replacements: Agustin Creevy, Hahuel Tetaz Chaparro, Eduardo Bello, Lucas Paulos, Rodrigo Bruni, Lautaro Bazan Velez, Nicolas Sanchez, Matias Moroni

TEAM NEWS: Australia ring the changes

10:10 , Luke Baker

Anyway, on to this game and two wounded lions (or Pumas/Wallabies) after last week’s chastening losses.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, both teams have rung the changes following last week’s debacles. Eddie Jones has opted for five alterations to his starting Australia line-up that lost heavily to the Springboks.

Winger Mark Nawaqanitawase, centre Samu Kerevi, flankers Jed Holloway and Fraser McReight and lock Richie Arnold all come into the starting XV. Co-captain Michael Hooper is injured, meaning McReight gets his chance in the No 7 jersey. Another flanker, Josh Kemeny, could make his international debut from the bench and Jones has resisted the temptation to start young star Carter Gordon, insisting the rookie fly-half needs more experience from the bench first.

Australia XV: Tom Wright; Mark Nawaqanitawase, Len Ikitau, Samu Kerevi, Marika Koroibete; Quade Cooper, Nic White; James Slipper (c), David Porecki, Allan Alaalatoa, Richie Arnold, Will Skelton, Jed Holloway, Fraser McReight, Rob Valetini

Replacements: Jordan Uelese, Angus Bell, Pone Fa’amausili, Matt Philip, Rob Leota, Josh Kemeny, Tate McDermott, Carter Gordon

New Zealand vs South Africa

10:03 , Luke Baker

In the other Rugby Championship contest this morning, the All Blacks laid down a serious marker as they beat South Africa 35-20 in Auckland - a superb performance by Ian Foster’s men.

Given the shortened nature of the Championship this year, they’ve all but won the title now and will be excitedly eyeing the World Cup.

Australia vs Argentina: How to watch Rugby Championship online and on TV

10:01 , Luke Baker

Australia and Argentina will be desperate to put chastening losses behind them this morning when they do battle in Sydney in round two of the Rugby Championship.

The opening weekend could hardly have gone worse for both sides as the All Blacks demolished the Pumas 41-12 in Argentina and while Wallabies coach Eddie Jones had talked big pre-match about making history in South Africa, the Springboks obliterated them 43-12 on home turf. With only one more round of games following this weekend’s action, both teams’ chances of lifting the trophy is already slim but a loss would extinguish that hope completely.

Jones was hoping to make a statement in his first game back as Australia boss but instead, the scale of the challenge in front of him with the World Cup looming became stark. His countryman Michael Cheika, with whom he has a complicated history, faces similar questions in his role as Pumas head coach.

History favours the Wallabies in this fixture – since 1991, only four of the 30 fixtures contested have been won by Argentina and only one of those victories came in Australia (in 2018). However, the Pumas did win the most recent game between the sides handsomely – 48-17 in last year’s Rugby Championship – and also recorded a pair of draws in Australia back in 2020.
