The Augusta Mayor's office held the second annual MLK Day of Service at The Master's Table soup kitchen in downtown Augusta on Monday. Mayor Garnett Johnson, along with volunteers, partnered with Golden Harvest Food Bank, The Medical College of Georgia, Project Refresh, and more to offer meals, free medical screenings, showers, and clothes to Augusta's homeless population.
"This community, I believe, is stronger when we unite together and in the spirit of Dr. King that’s why we’re here," said Johnson.
Golden Harvest Food Band expected to feed about 300 people.
"I think on a day like today, on MLK (Day), where it’s really about taking care of each other and acknowledging our commitment to the community, to have the mayor and his team and all these medical students here to do screenings it’s just really powerful that we’re coming together today to serve," said President and CEO of Golden Harvest Food Bank Amy Breitmann. "So just grateful for the help and the assistance as we continue serving this community."
