Shenandoah Valley Model Train and Railroading Show returns

FISHERSVILLE – The Augusta County Railroad Museum will host the annual Model Train and Railroading Show on Sunday, May 5 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The event will offer scale trains and equipment, "From N to G plus full-size railroad memorabilia." Advice on how to build a model train layout or enhance the one you already have will be available. Information on the history of railroads in the Shenandoah Valley will also be available.

"Whether you are looking for a rare train item or just want to add to your collection, you can probably find it at this show," reads the press release. "You may even just want to see what is available or watch the interesting operating layouts displayed by several model train clubs."

VERONA – Last week, the Augusta County Board of Supervisors passed next year's budget including improvements to the Augusta County Fire-Rescue system.

Waynesboro Public Works calls for community answers

WAYNESBORO – The Waynesboro Public Works department is calling for citizen feedback.

"Help us better understand how to provide meaningful and timely information about Public Works services and programs," reads the press release. "Survey closes May 31, 2024. We appreciate your feedback."

The survey is available online at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/5BRNZBK.

Respondents can also opt into a raffle for a $25 Visa gift card.

Shenandoah National Park celebrates volunteer day, announces closure

LURAY – Shenandoah National Park is celebrating the third annual sHow Your Love for Shenandoah, an annual volunteer park event. Amid the volunteer work, some picnic grounds will be closed.

"At [Pinnacles Picnic Grounds at mile 36.7], new picnic tables will be constructed along with the addition of accessible picnic grills," reads the press release. "The work will require the closure of Pinnacles Picnic Grounds to all visitors on May 3 at 3 p.m. until May 4 at 6 p.m. to facilitate safety and efficiency while staff and volunteers stage supplies and work crews, conduct the work, and complete site clean-up."

The sign-up period for this year's event has passed, but those interested in volunteering for the park can find a forum online at the Shenandoah National Park website.

VDOT cautions against fraudulent toll texting scam

RICHMOND – The Virginia Department of Transportation is joining the FBI in warning Virginia residents of a text message scam.

"Since March, people across the country submitted complaints to the FBI about receiving text messages representing toll road collection services claiming they owe money for unpaid tolls. The link in the text message is created to impersonate a toll facility’s or collection service’s name, and phone numbers appear to change between states. By clicking the link, people could risk giving away sensitive data, including credit card information."

The scam is not specific to E-ZPass Virginia customers. According to the press release, customers can check their accounts online at the Toll Roads in Virginia website and E-ZPass website, or contact customer service.

VDOT traffic alerts for April 29 to May 3

VERONA – The following is a list of highway work that may affect traffic in the Staunton transportation district during the coming weeks. Scheduled work is subject to change due to inclement weather and material supplies. Motorists are advised to watch for slow-moving tractors during mowing operations. When traveling through a work zone, be alert to periodic changes in traffic patterns and lane closures.

INTERSTATE 64

  • *UPDATE* Mile marker 87 to 96, eastbound and westbound – Shoulder closures for pipe repairs, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

  • *NEW* Mile marker 90 to 88, westbound – Overnight alternating lane closures for overhead sign repairs, 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. Wednesday night.

  • *UPDATE* Mile marker 95 to 96, eastbound – Right shoulder closures for sign installation work, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

  • *UPDATE* Mile marker 96 to 100, eastbound – Overnight left lane closures for traffic equipment installation, 7 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. Monday through Thursday nights.

INTERSTATE 81

  • *UPDATE* Mile marker 205 to 214, northbound and southbound – Shoulder closures for pipe work and shoulder repairs, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

  • *NEW* Mile marker 214 to 213, southbound – Overnight alternating lane closures for maintenance to bridge over Route 11, 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. through Thursday night.

  • Mile marker 214 to 210, southbound – Alternating lane closures for milling and paving operations, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. nights through July 25. Exit 213 traffic will be detoured during ramp paving.

  • Mile marker 220 to 222, northbound and southbound – Left and right shoulder closures for bridge work, 24/7 through September 30.

  • Mile marker 219 to 223, northbound and southbound – Overnight alternating lane closures for bridge maintenance, 8 p.m. to 9 a.m. through night of May 9.

  • *UPDATE* Mile marker 221 to 226, northbound and southbound – Overnight left lane closures for installation of concrete barriers, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. nights through May 10. Following barrier placement, left shoulder closures remain in place 24/7 through spring 2026. Work is related to I-81 widening project.

PRIMARY ROADS

  • Route 11 (Lee Highway) – Northbound right lane closures between Route 940 (Dick Huff Lane) and Staunton city limits for sidewalk installation, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. through May 24.

  • Route 262 (Woodrow Wilson Parkway) – Eastbound and westbound left shoulder closures due to widening project in the area of the Route 252 (Middlebrook Avenue) interchange, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 a.m. through May 25.

SECONDARY ROADS

  • Route 612 (Laurel Hill Road) – Westbound right lane and shoulder closures between Route 818 (Dunsmore Road) and Route 1906 (Lodge Lane) for milling at various entrances, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. through May 27. Work related to Verona pedestrian improvement project.

  • Route 624 (South Delphine Avenue, Waynesboro) – Shoulder closures between South Oak Lane and Chinquapin Drive for work related to construction of Waynesboro Southern Corridor, through May 30, 2025.

  • Route 635 (Barterbrook Road) – Closed between I-81 frontage roads (FR-217 and FR-218) for bridge replacement as part of I-81 southbound auxiliary lane project. Follow posted detour. Expected completion summer 2025.

  • Route 664 (Lyndhurst Road, Waynesboro) – Shoulder closures between Miami Avenue and Purdue Street for work related to construction of Waynesboro Southern Corridor, through June 30, 2025.

  • Route 675 (Broadhead School Road) – Flagger traffic control between Route 11 (Lee Jackson Highway) and Route 604 (McClures Mill Road) for utility work, 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. through Thursday.

  • Route 707 (Trimbles Mill Road) – Flagger traffic control between Route 806 (Boy Scout Lane) and Route 713 (Shuey Road) for utility work, 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. through Thursday.

  • Route 708 (Glebe School Road) – Closed to through traffic between Route 711 (Miller Farm Road) and Route 710 (Eidson Creek Road) for maintenance to bridge over Eidson Creek, through May 16. Follow posted detour.

  • *UPDATE* Route 876 (Glebe School Road) – Flagger traffic control between Route 713 (Shuey Road) and Route 602 (Summerdean Road) for utility work, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. through May 16.

  • Various roads – Mobile traffic control for mowing operations. Flagger traffic control for drainage work, tree removal, shoulder repairs, pavement patching and brush cutting, 7:30 to 3 p.m. on weekdays.
