Which Augusta-area high school baseball teams qualified for the GHSA state playoffs?

Postseason baseball isn't just for October.

The Georgia High School Association state baseball playoffs begin this week and several Augusta-area programs are looking to make their marks. Defending Class 3A state champion Harlem is once again nationally ranked and the region champs look just as dangerous as their 2023 counterparts.

Greenbrier, meanwhile, is another 20-win team looking to improve upon its final four appearance a year ago. Add in back-to-back-to-back region champion Evans, and there are several teams that could be playing in the final series of the season come May. In all, there are eight Augusta-area programs dancing in 2024 and more than one could be holding up that trophy in a few weeks.

The South Carolina High School League, Georgia Independent Athletic Association and South Carolina Independent School Association begin their state tournament next week (April 29).

Augusta-area baseball teams in the GHSA state playoffs this week

Class 6A

April 25

Alcovy (12-10) at Evans (23-6)

The Knights just clinched a third-straight region championship and will enter the Class 6A state tournament as a No. 1 seed. After a first-round exit to Thomas County Central a year ago, Evans is looking to make some noise more akin to its elite eight run from 2022.

Class 5A

April 23

M.L. King (9-8) at Greenbrier (20-7)

The Wolfpack finished runner-up in a tough region and, with a deep senior class, is primed for another sustained postseason run. Greenbrier fell in the Class 4A final four to eventual state champion Loganville in 2023.

Class 3A

April 23

Dougherty (8-9) at Harlem (28-1)

Harlem accomplished something even last year’s state title team didn’t in the form of a Region 4-3A championship. Regardless, the nationally-ranked Bulldogs have their eyes set on a bigger prize: defending their 2023 Class 3A state title.

Richmond Academy (6-12) at Columbus (15-14)

This is the second-straight state playoff berth for the Musketeers, who have a chance to make some noise against a second-seeded Columbus team.

Cross Creek (9-11) at Thomasville (16-9)

Cross Creek comes in as the No. 4 seed for Region 4 and will travel south to face a top-seeded Thomasville team.

Class 2A

April 25

Cook (22-6) at Thomson (14-10)

Thomson earned a state playoff bid on the back of a five-game win streak to end the regular season, including a season sweep of Region 4 foe Westside. The Bulldogs host arguably one of the toughest No. 3 seeds in the state in 22-win Cook.

Westside (11-12) at Jeff Davis (19-7)

Westside baseball and state playoff berths go together like peas and carrots. The Patriots earned a fourth-place finish in Region 4-2A, highlighted by a seven-game win streak from March 25 to April 4. They'll travel to face top-seeded, Region 1 champ Jeff Davis.

Class A D-II

April 23

GSIC (7-16-1) at Johnson County (13-8)

Georgia School for Innovation & the Classics takes on the Region 5 champs after a fourth-place finish in Region 8. The Patriots enter the state playoffs on a four-game losing streak and their last win came April 1 against the Augusta Eagles.
