August already? Check out classic summer events: Idaho fair, pro golf, Boise soul food

August is heating up, and not just temperature-wise. There’s so much going on! If you enjoy food, beer, golf and music (so much music), this is your month.

The Western Idaho Fair runs Aug. 19-28, so it’s time to put your keto diet on pause and put deep-fried everything in your face — and then get on some rides. Maybe plan a night when there is also a grandstand concert — that way you can rock out to Stone Temple Pilots (Aug. 25) with your Pronto Pup.

Want food minus the carnival vibes? The Boise Soul Food Festival on Aug. 13 will be serving up all sorts of Black- and African-inspired foods at Julia Davis Park. Bring your appetite for this huge feast, complete with music, dancing and vendors.

For those who want “more, more, more,” hope you are one of the luckies who grabbed a ticket to Billy Idol performing Aug. 19 as part of the festivities at the Boise Albertsons Open (Aug. 18-21). His concert is sold out, and so is the show on Saturday, Aug. 20, from Grammy-winning band Train. Tickets are still available for Midland (Aug. 18).

Speaking of concerts, the music scene is lit right now. Bonnie Raitt and The Chicks both have shows this month at the Valley’s big outdoor venues. The outdoor weekly series such as Alive After Five, Thursday Thunder and Great Garden Escape are still going strong. But if you prefer your music indoors with A/C, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band is playing the Egyptian Theatre on Thursday, Aug. 4. The Revolution Center will host Jo Dee Messina (Friday, Aug. 5), Daughtry with Black Stone Cherry (Aug. 9), and Sum 41/Simple Plan (Aug. 16). Warrant/Lita Ford and Kip Winger will hit up Stoney’s Road House on Aug. 20.

And after multiple reschedules, the Backstreet Boys are coming to the Ford Idaho Center on Aug. 19.

Note: Check with event websites or social media before attending. Events might be canceled or postponed after press deadline because of the pandemic, or might have new rules in place regarding masks and proof of vaccination.
