This Athens-area dual sport athlete sets new state record at GHSA track and field meet

Athens Academy's Austin McGee has notched the 200-meter dash record for GHSA Class 2A, shattering a 40-year run by the previous holder.

The senior clocked a time of 21.38 seconds on Saturday afternoon in Commerce at the GHSA track and field state championships to take gold for the Spartans. He beat the second-place runner by a mere .05 seconds. The previous 2A state record was 21.40, set by Olympian Antonio McKay of Roosevelt High in 1982 — the school closed in 1985.

His previous personal best for the outdoor 200-meter dash was 21.55 seconds, which he set in the preliminary races earlier that day. McGee only competes in outdoor season, participating as a cornerback for the Spartan football team in the fall — which he will be attending Georgia State following his graduation this spring where he will play for his father, Dell McGee, the former Georgia football running backs coach.

McGee also won the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.55, happening to set another personal record in the preliminaries just before with a time of 10.41.

He was part of Josh Alexander's roster that went to the first round of the GHSA football state playoffs in November, where they lost 53-26 to Columbia. He had 18 receptions for 383 yards and five touchdowns, two solo tackles and an interception on the season.
