Arizona State's upset attempt of Washington comes up short in Pac-12 college football game

ASU football's upset attempt of Washington comes up short

The ASU football team's upset attempt of No. 5 Washington came up just short in a 15-7 loss to the Huskies at Husky Stadium on Saturday night.

With the Sun Devils leading 7-6 in the fourth quarter, Trenton Bourguet's fourth-and-3 pass at the Washington 12 was intercepted by Mishael Powell, who ran the ball all the way back for a touchdown to give Washington a 12-7 lead with 8:11 remaining.

The Huskies later added a field goal for the game's final points.

Washington improved to 7-0 with the win.

ASU fell to 1-6 with the loss.

ASU outgained Washington in the game 341-288.

It had a 145-13 advantage in rushing yards and a 37:29-22:31 advantage in time of possession.

But the Bourguet interception, ASU's lone turnover, absolutely crushed the Sun Devils.

Michael Penix Jr. went 27-for-42 for 275 yards for Washington. He threw two interceptions after coming into the game with three passes intercepted all season.

Bourguet finished 26-for-47 for 196 yards for Arizona State.

ASU hosts Washington State next week. Washington plays at Stanford.

Washington adds to lead with field goal vs. ASU

Grady Gross connected on a 24-yard field goal to top off an 8-play, 62-yard drive and give Washington a 15-7 lead over ASU with 3:16 left in the fourth quarter.

ASU's offense appears to have one final shot to try to rally to tie this game.

Score: Washington 15, ASU 7 (3:16 left in fourth quarter)

Washington forces ASU to punt after 3-and-out

The momentum in this game is suddenly all Washington's.

ASU just went 3-and-out, losing 10 yards, forcing the Sun Devils to punt from their own end zone.

ASU's defense has been coming up with stops all game.

It has to do so again if the Sun Devils are going to have a chance at the upset.

ASU vs. Washington game turns on huge ASU turnover

ASU just had a 4th and 3 at the Washington 12 and elected to go for it.

It definitely did not go its way.

Trenton Bourguet was intercepted by Mishael Powell, who ran it back all the way for a touchdown to give Washington a 12-7 lead.

Washington's two-point conversion attempt failed.

The drive seemed to turn when the officials picked up a flag on Washington for holding on an incomplete pass from Trenton Bourguet to Troy Omeire on a first-and-10 play at Washington's 19.

Video replays showed the Washington defender grabbing Omeire's jersey twice.

ASU has outplayed Washington in this game, but now trails thanks to Powell's huge play.

Score: Washington 12, ASU 7 (8:11 left in fourth quarter)

Washington pulls within one point with field goal vs. Arizona State

Grady Gross hit a 47-yard field goal to pull Washington within 7-6 against Arizona State, capping off a 7-play, 40-yard drive for the Huskies.

But ASU's defense kept Washington out of the end zone. The Huskies had a 1st and 10 at ASU's 27, but lost three yards over their next three plays, forcing them to kick the long field goal.

Score: Arizona State 7, Washington 6 (12:28 left in fourth quarter)

ASU fails to convert on fourth down vs. Washington

ASU just went for it on 4th and 3 at the Washington 30, but Jalin Conyers wasn't able to catch Trenton Bourguet's pass, turning the ball over on downs to Washington.

ASU's drive went for seven plays and 48 yards, taking 2:41 off the clock.

ASU holds 7-3 lead on Washington after three quarters

The third quarter of the Arizona State vs. Washington game was a repeat of the first quarter: Neither team scored.

There are some stats that have been key ones so far in this game, with Washington's four turnovers to ASU's 0 the most important.

But the rushing yardage stat in this game has also been important.

ASU holds a 124-18 advantage in rushing yards in this game.

Those rushing yards for ASU have allowed the Sun Devils to build a 28:07-16:53 advantage in time of possession, leaving the explosive Washington offense off the field.

Score: ASU 7, Washington 3 (end of third quarter)

Arizona State stops Washington again

Washington gained 19 yards on its first play of its third possession of the second half, but lost four yards after that and had to punt after a 4-play, 15-yard drive.

Michael Penix Jr. is now 20-for-30 passing for Washington, for 185 yards.

The Huskies haven't been able to get anything going with their running game, with 11 carries for 18 yards in the game.

ASU comes up empty after lengthy drive against Washington

The Sun Devils just went 33 yards over 11 plays over 7:03, but failed to score when Dario Longhetto's 43-yard field goal attempt was blocked by Elijah Jackson. It was Longhetto's second missed field goal of the game.

ASU converted two fourth down conversions on the drive, but elected to try the field goal on 4th and 3 at the Washington 25.

It didn't work out.

Arizona State forces Washington to punt

The Huskies didn't turn the ball over on their second possession of the second half, but they had to punt after going 5-plays for nine yards on their drive.

This ASU defense continues to step up and make plays when it needs to and it continues to pressure Penix Jr. and the Washington receivers.

ASU can't capitalize on Washington turnover

The Sun Devils weren't able to capitalize off the Washington turnover, or the great field position after the turnover, and had to punt the ball back to the Huskies after going 3-and-out on their first possession of the second half.

ASU only has seven points off of Washington's four turnovers.

Arizona State football forces another Washington turnover

The Washington Huskies have had six possessions in this game.

They have now turned the ball over on four of them.

Washington's Ja'Lynn Polk just fumbled after a 7-yard reception, giving ASU the ball at the Washington 40-yard line.

Washington's drive went for two plays and 12 yards.

Arizona State leads No. 5 Washington at half

The ASU football team upset Washington in Tempe last season, 45-38.

At halftime of the game between the Sun Devils and Huskies in Seattle this season, the 1-5 Sun Devils lead the 6-0 Huskies, the No. 5-ranked team in the nation, 7-3.

Yes, ASU, who entered the game as a 28.5-point underdog, leads 7-3.

Washington came into the game leading the nation in yards per play at 8.49. Tonight? 167 yards on 30 plays. 5.567 yards per play.

Michael Penix Jr. threw two interceptions in the first half for Washington after entering the game with three interceptions all season.

He also lost a fumble.

Washington has 24 yards rushing in this game. ASU has 82.

Washington is 2-for-6 on third down.

ASU holds a 17:48 to 12:12 advantage in time of possession.

Can the Sun Devils keep this up?

Halftime score: Arizona State 7, Washington 3

ASU defense holds Washington to field goal late in second quarter

The ASU defense allowed Washington to drive 73 yards over 10 plays, but it made some big plays late in the drive to hold the Huskies to a 25-yard field goal by Grady Gross to put Washington on the scoreboard.

But ASU didn't allow the Huskies to get into the end zone.

Score: Arizona State 7, Washington 3 (:11 left in second quarter)

Arizona State takes lead on Washington

The Arizona State Sun Devils were more than a 4-touchdown underdog against Washington.

They aren't playing like it.

ASU just took a 7-0 lead against No. 5 Washington with an 8-play, 53-yard drive that took 4:28 off the clock.

ASU QB Trenton Bourguet is 13-for-231 for 78 yards passing in the game.

The Sun Devils have rushed for 83 yards on 14 carries, with Cameron Skattebo leading the way with four carries for 31 yards, and the most recent carry going for a 1-yard touchdown run for Arizona State.

ASU football forces another Washington turnover

Michael Penix Jr. has thrown two interceptions against Arizona State.

The Washington QB now has lost a fumble, too.

ASU recovered a Penix Jr. fumble, which appeared to come on a botched handoff, at the ASU 47 to end another Huskies' drive.

Incredibly, ASU's defense had just one takeaway on the season entering this game (six games).

It has three takeaways so far in the first half against Washington.

ASU's Clayton Smith was called for roughing the passer for a late hit on Michael Penix Jr. on the drive, and he was disqualified from the game for targeting for hitting Penix Jr. with his helmet.

The Sun Devils' defense has Penix Jr. and the Huskies' offense rattled with their pressure in this game, something many wouldn't have thought possible entering this game.

Sun Devils' drive stalls again against Washington

ASU hasn't been able to get on the scoreboard yet after two Washington turnovers, with the Sun Devils' latest drive going 27 yards over five plays.

ASU's Trenton Bourguet is 10-for-17 in the game for 45 yards.

ASU football picks off Michael Penix Jr. for second time

How about that ASU defense?

With Washington driving, Arizona State's Shamari Simmons was able to make a diving interception of a Penix Jr. pass at the ASU 3-yard line, to give the Sun Devils the ball back early in the second quarter.

Penix Jr. is now 8-for-11 for 98 yards and the two interceptions.

He entered the game with three interceptions thrown on the season. ASU's defensive line put pressure on Penix Jr., causing the errant throw.

First quarter ends with scoreless tie between Sun Devils, Huskies

The ASU defense held Washington off the scoreboard in the first quarter, the first time the Huskies have not scored in the first quarter this season.

ASU out-gained Washington in the first 15 minutes, 86-62. Washington had -1 yards rushing in the first quarter.

Michael Penix Jr.'s interception was the lone turnover in the first quarter, although ASU did go 0-for-1 on fourth-down attempts.

ASU also won the time of possession battle, 9:51-5:09.

Score: Washington 0, Arizona State 0 (end of first quarter)

ASU turns ball over on downs vs. Washington

ASU just completed a 9-play, 40-yard drive, but had nothing to show for it as it turned the ball over on downs at the Washington 40.

The Sun Devils are moving the ball vs. the Huskies, but they haven't been able to finish their drives and get on the scoreboard yet.

An early positive? ASU has carried the ball seven times for 49 yards rushing.

Arizona State defense stops Washington again

The ASU defense is holding its own against Washington early at Husky Stadium in Seattle.

Washington has 44 total yards on two possessions on offense in this game, 43 coming through the air and one on the ground.

The Huskies have been limited to just one first down.

Michael Penix Jr. is 3-for-5 for 43 yards, with one interception in the Huskies' two possessions.

That's not a bad start for ASU's defense.

Can it keep it up? Washington has one of the most potent offenses in the nation, so it will not be an easy task to contain the Huskies.

ASU football fails to capitalize on Washington's turnover

The Sun Devils had a great chance to take a lead on No. 5 Washington, but Dario Longhetto's 31-yard field goal attempt hit the upright and bounced off.

So Arizona State wasn't able to capitalize off of a rare Michael Penix Jr. interception.

The Sun Devils' drive went for 8-plays and 32 yards, but it stalled deep in Washington territory.

You have to take advantage of chances like that if you are going to have a chance to hang with Washington and its high-flying offense.

Arizona State intercepts Michael Penix Jr. on Washington's first drive

The Sun Devils came up with a big play on defense on Washington's first drive, intercepting quarterback Michael Penix Jr.

Penix Jr. has been exceptional for Washington this season, but his second pass of the game sailed on him, with ASU's Ro Torrence able to come down with it to give the Sun Devils the ball back at Washington's 45-yard line.

Penix Jr. entered the game having thrown just three interceptions this season, with 20 touchdown passes.

ASU forced to punt after 6-play opening drive vs. Washington

The Sun Devils went 15 plays over 15 yards on their first drive of the game, but were forced to punt after a couple of incomplete passes from starting QB Trenton Bourguet.

ASU's Dario Longhetto handled the punt for the Sun Devils. He's ASU's placekicker. It is his first time punting for Arizona State.
