Assassin’s Creed: Codename Jade’s Official Title Is Exactly What You’d Think

Did you know that Ubisoft will be releasing a full-fat Assassin’s Creed game for mobile soon-ish? It’s even set in China, one of the places that a lot of people have been hoping for as a setting for a long time now. People are, to say the least, pretty excited for it.

Up until recently, the mobile game was called Assassin’s Creed: Codename Jade. It was an in-progress name, and Ubisoft promised that the game would eventually have a better, official title. That title has been revealed, and it is – drumroll please – Assassin’s Creed Jade. Yep, that’s right, Ubisoft just dropped the codename and kept the Jade.

Believe it or not, there’s actually precedent for this kind of miniscule name change in the games industry. Square Enix has done it a couple times now, first with Project Octopath Traveler, which later released as Octopath Traveler, and Project Triangle Strategy, which ended up with the name – you guessed it – Triangle Strategy.

Ubisoft isn’t a stranger to name changes either, even shortly before release. Up until a few months before the release of Immortals Fenyx Rising, the Greek mythology adventure game was known as Gods and Monsters. That’s a pretty drastic name change, but it wasn’t because the company wanted to, instead being the result of a legal challenge from Monster Energy, the company that makes energy drinks and is apparently very litigious.

What were we talking about again? Oh right, Assassin’s Creed Jade. At Gamescom, Ubisoft released a new trailer for the game, showing off gameplay for the first time to the public. It’s had some beta testing in the past, but those beta programs are tightly controlled, so official gameplay footage was very much off the table.

Though, calling this gameplay footage is probably a bit of a stretch, it’s mostly sweeping shots of characters that could be in gameplay sequences, but it’s hard to say for sure. At the very least, it’s looking pretty decent, and looks like it could probably do alright on Switch (hint hint). For now, you’ll have to deal with it on Android and iOS devices.

Assassin’s Creed Jade doesn’t have a release date yet, but another closed beta is set to happen soon. You can sign up for the beta on the official Assassin’s Creed Jade website.
