Ascension transitions to manual systems amid last week's ransomware attack

Ascension continues to make progress toward restoration and recovery following last week's ransomware attack that affected hospitals across the US.

Despite the attack, all Ascension St. John hospitals, physician offices, and care sites across Oklahoma remain open and operational by using manual and paper-based systems during the disruption, according to an Ascension statement.

"Despite the challenges posed by the recent ransomware incident, patient safety continues to be our utmost priority," read the statement.

The healthcare organization is collaborating with forensic experts to investigate the incident, understand its root cause, and determine how it occurred. In parallel, Ascension brought in additional cybersecurity to aid in the rebuilding and restoration efforts.

"Our priority remains providing quality patient care and relaying up-to-date information when available as we work through this recovery process," said an Ascension spokesperson. "As we continue to progress in these recovery and restoration efforts, we want to express a sincere thank you to our patients and community for your patience and support through this difficult time."

Ascension patients should proceed as planned

Ascension explained patients with scheduled doctor's appointments should proceed as planned, although they may experience longer wait times due to the transition to manual systems. Patients are advised to bring notes on symptoms and a list of current medications.

Certain Ascension Rx retail pharmacies in Oklahoma are not operational, and patients should bring their prescription number or bottle to facilitate finding an alternative pharmacy.

Ascension's urgent care centers and emergency rooms are fully operational, though patients may encounter delays. Scheduled elective surgeries, diagnostic imaging, tests, and treatments will continue as planned, with possible delays. Any necessary rescheduling will be communicated directly to patients.

"Our leadership, physicians, care teams, and associates are working to ensure patient care continues with minimal to no interruption," said an Ascension spokesperson. "We appreciate our community's patience and understanding."
