Stunning photo shows family's upstate New York lake house completely encased in ice

A woman who went to check on her family's upstate New York home amid a vicious winter storm was greeted by a rather chilling sight.

After days of frigid temperatures and extreme winds, Maureen Whelan and her family made the drive to their Lake Ontario summer house to check on the residence, only to discover the entire house was caked in a sheet of ice, which measured 4-feet thick at some parts.

Photos of the home:

Apparently, gusts of wind as strong as 80 mph had blown water from the lake onto the exterior of the home, where it froze in place. The dystopian scene shocked Whelan, who told Inside Edition that she assumed the home, which sits over 50 feet from the shoreline, would have been better protected by a nearby seawall.

"We just could not believe it," she told the outlet.

Whelan said that while the frozen home was a sight to behold, she is worried about the damage the building may have sustained, which likely won't be assessable until the ice has melted.
