Intense nor'easter uncovered Revolutionary War ship on beach in Maine

Updated

The nor'easter that rocked the East Coast and left hundreds of thousands of people without power was also powerful enough to wash away enough sand from a beach in Maine to reveal a surprise from the Revolutionary War.

The York Police Department posted photos of a Revolutionary War-era ship that surfaced after the storm calmed.

The wreck was examined by the Maine Historic Preservation Commission and labeled as archeological site ME 497-004.

The powerful storm that uncovered the shipwreck caused widespread damage from Virginia to Maine, with large chunks of coastline in Massachusetts and other parts of the Northeast washing away.

Certain areas were hit so hard that some described their neighborhood as a "war zone."
