The emotional reason Joe Maddon put on an Angels hat after winning the World Series

Joe Maddon may be the manager of the Cubs, but it was a different team's hat on his head on Wednesday night after Chicago won the World Series.

Maddon was a bench coach for the Angels in 2002 –- the same year his father passed away. The Angels also won the World Series that year. Ever since, Maddon has maintained a sense of closeness to his dad in a unique way.

"Omens, I don't know. I did see my dad's hat in my bag today. I carry my dad's hat with me," Maddon said.

"He passed away in 2002, we won the World Series, and I've had his old Angel hat in my bag since then. So it goes everywhere. So the one thing I'm relying on today is my dad. I held onto his hat a little bit this morning, and that's probably the omen in a sense going into this game."

Based on baseball superstition, that may be what brought a little good luck to his team on Wednesday night. Maddon pulled the hat out of his bad during the 10th inning. The Cubs scored two runs and held on defensively to win the World Series.

Chills.
