How do the athletes stack up on 'Dancing With the Stars?'

Updated

This season on 'Dancing With the Stars,' we're graced with the athletic roster of Calvin Johnson, Laurie Hernandez, James Hinchcliffe and Ryan Lochte.

It seems borderline unfair for athletes to compete on the show because the natural ability it requires to excel at their sport makes an athlete a natural at dancing too, right?

Wrong.

We'll be ranking their sambas and foxtrots throughout the season, but after the first week, how do the athletes stack up against each other?

4. Ryan Lochte

Poor Ryan Lochte had a rough first night. Actually, we were pleasantly surprised by his performance. It wasn't so much his dance moves that struggled, but more so his reputation.

After his performance, two crazed men rushed the stage as if their team had just won a Super Bowl. Except they weren't doing it out of celebration -– they were creating a protest of sorts right there on live television. It was super weird and really scary to watch.

Judge Bruno Tanioli told Lochte that his stiff limbs looked as if they weren't "quite used to dry land yet," essentially saying what all of us at home were thinking. Other than that, we saw a lot of potential.

3. Calvin Johnson

With Megatron retired, Calvin Johnson became "Cha Cha Tron" on Monday night's premiere of 'Dancing With the Stars.'

The smiley (and literally ecstatic) former wide receiver rocked his infamous Detroit Lions blue with the number 81 on the back and his partner wore a sparkly, cheerleader-like version of the same thing.

Cha Cha Tron (Okay, this is weird. We'll stop now.) was actually so good. This was fairly unexpected considering his own sister wrote him off before the season even started.

We have him in third place in the athlete ranks as of now, but he could easily inch his way closer to the top.

2. James Hinchcliffe

Among the athlete pool on the show, James Hinchcliffe was the judges' favorite by a long shot.

Okay, IndyCar driver -– we see you!

But seriously, Hinchcliffe completely stole the room and Len Goodman even said he "blew him away." When has that ever happened on a season premiere?

1. Laurie Hernandez

Even though Hinchcliffe was more impressive than expected, America's sweetheart takes the No. 1 spot in our rankings.

Right -– as if you didn't think Laurie Hernandez would dominate on DWTS.

The adorable gold medalist is as good of a dancer as everyone predicted. From the moment her participation was announced on the show to the second she stepped on the floor, everyone knew Laurie would kill it.

And then she did.

So for now, our money's on Hernandez. But Hinchcliffe is right up there with her.

Could someone steal her No. 1 spot next week? Absolutely, we're dealing with competitive athletes here.
