Ryan Lochte suspended for 10 months over Rio gas station incident

Ryan Lochte and the three other U.S. swimmers involved in the vandalization of a gas station bathroom in Rio this summer will face a suspension handed down by the U.S. Olympic Committee and USA Swimming, according to media reports.

Lochte, who will receive the harshest suspension, will be banned from the sport for 10 months. An official announcement of the punishment is expected to come on Thursday.

Last month, Lochte was charged with making false report of robbery after claiming that he and three fellow U.S. swimmers were robbed at gunpoint after competing at the 2016 Summer Olympics. He faces up to 18 months in prison if convicted.

Lochte left Brazil early, but his three teammates — James Feigen, Gunnar Bentz and Jack Conger — were detained and questioned by police, at which point their story began to unravel. All three were eventually released, with Feigen later donating $11,000 to a Brazilian charity.

After the events came to light, a slew of sponsors — including Speedo, Ralph Lauren and mattress company Airweave — severed ties with Lochte.
