Long Island man stabs father to death before 20 witnesses on Zoom call - but no one who called 911 knew where crime happened, police say

Twenty people saw a Long Island man stab his father to death — but when they called 911, they couldn’t give the location of the crime they witnessed virtually, police said.

Dwight Powers, 72, was participating in a Zoom meeting at his Amityville home around noon Thursday when his 32-year-old son Thomas Scully-Powers came into the frame and fatally stabbed him, Suffolk County Police said.

“People thought he might have been attacked,” a police spokesperson said. “They noted him fall off the screen and then they heard heavy breathing.”

Fled the scene by jumping out of a window

A number of people at the virtual meeting immediately called 911, said police. But officers’ response was delayed because nobody on the call was sure where Powers lived, they said.

Scully-Powers fled the scene by jumping out of a window. He was apprehended about a mile away shortly before 1 p.m., authorities said.

Scully-Powers was charged with second-degree murder and later taken to hospital for minor injuries he sustained from the jump. A motive for the stabbing has not yet been established, cops said.

Police were in the process of obtaining a search warrant and are hopeful the knife used in the attack will be found.
