Mom wears Buzz Lightyear helmet to grocery store, gets laughs: 'You are the crazy one in this family'

A North Carolina mother has gone viral after sharing footage of her unusual “mask” while running an errand.

In April, Kelly Hogan Painter of Waxhaw, N.C., took to Facebook to share a 36-second video in which she sports a Buzz Lightyear helmet.

“When your husband bets you — well, first he tells you that you can’t go to the store without a mask and then you tell him that it was recommended and not necessary,” Hogan Painter, a mother of three, says. “And then, he tells you you can’t go get food for the kids because we have no masks in the house, so you supply the mask.”

The mother then closes the helmet cover and says, “I’m going in.”

Since Hogan Painter shared the clip, it has received over 163,000 views and more than 100 comments.

“I can’t stop watching this and cracking up,” one friend wrote. “I miss you!”

“Omg! You are the crazy one in this family,” another added. “Wish I had been there. I would have recorded you shopping and posted it all.”

In an interview with Insider, Hogan Painter revealed that she decided to go to the store after realizing that her pantry was nearly empty.

“I realized one morning that we were eating oatmeal, and none of us like oatmeal,” she said. “So I knew I needed to go to the grocery store.”

The mother said she had one of two options: either put a plastic bag over her head or wear the $25 helmet. She chose the helmet. Since then, she’s been wearing it quite often, even getting laughs and stares from strangers in the process.

“They might be laughing at me, or they might be laughing with me,” she admitted. “I really don’t care either way, as long as they’re laughing.”
