Watch this tugboat get scarily close to a massive ship

Who knew working on a tugboat could be so thrilling? The clip above provides just a glimpse of what it’s like manning the small vessels, and it’s not for the faint of heart.

If shipping transportation doesn’t sound fascinating to you, McAllister Towing & Transportation has given the public an inside look into what it’s like to work for the company on its Instagram page. There are tons of videos that show what it is like to cruise the open waters alongside some seriously massive ships.

In the video, you can see a tiny tugboat get scarily close to a gigantic vessel. The heart-stopping footage shows the tip of the boat apparently brush up against the anchor of the huge ship before moving around it. What’s also surprising is the appearance of one of the men working on the small ship. The size of the man, who appears barely visible, brings into perspective the scale of the tiny tugboat, which is actually huge but pales in comparison to the humongous boat it’s working on.

McAllister is a marine transportation company that has celebrated 150 years in the business. Its fleet of 75 tugboats, crew boats, and barges works across 17 regions from the East Coast to Portland.

“McAllister Towing is one of the oldest and largest family-owned marine towing and transportation companies in the United States,” the company website notes. “Founded by Captain James McAllister in 1864 with a single sail lighter, the company has served the maritime community continuously, earning a reputation for unsurpassed excellence.”

Tugboats are small vessels designed to push and pull other ships that are unable to maneuver themselves. As the video above demonstrates, despite their small size, tugboats are quite powerful.
