Johnny Boychuk needed 90 stitches after gruesome skate slice

New York Islanders defenseman Johnny Boychuk rushed off the ice Tuesday night after taking a skate blade to the face in an awkward collision with Canadiens winger Artturi Lehkonen.

On Wednesday, Isles GM Lou Lamoriello provided an update on Boychuk’s status, revealing the 36-year-old blueliner needed an astonishing 90 stitches to seal the wound on his eyelid.

“Johnny Boychuk is ok, there’s been no damage to his eye,” Lamoriello said.

“He felt the skate blade get his eye, but fortunately it just got the eyelid, and it took 90 stitches to fix—a plastic surgeon took care of it.”
