Police shoot man who killed 1 at Missouri community center

MARYLAND HEIGHTS, Mo. (AP) — A police officer shot and wounded a gunman after he walked into a suburban St. Louis community center and started shooting, killing a woman, authorities said.

Maryland Heights police Chief Bill Carson said an officer was in the parking lot when gunfire erupted around 8:15 p.m. Monday. When a woman ran outside to tell him about the shooter, the officer rushed inside and exchanged gunfire with the gunman.

The gunman was hit multiple times. The officer was not injured.

"I believe the action of our police officer was quite heroic. He immediately went inside the community center and confronted the gunman," Carson said.

Carson said the gunman was being treated at a hospital, but the chief had no information on his condition.

Police didn't immediately release the names of the gunman or the woman who was killed. Carson said he didn't know a motive for the attack.

He said the officer was in full uniform and had been at the center, which houses a police substation, earlier filling out a police report.

Police are reviewing a surveillance video of the shooting and interviewing witnesses.

The city said the community center would be closed until further notice.
